Tri-City Elks Car Show

There will be a pig roast Sept. 12 beginning at 2 p.m. Roasted pig with all the fixins. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the bar. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Country Western Dance lessons will begin Sept. 14 from 7-9 p.m. Lori Enos is the instructor, and the cost is $6 per lesson. Proceeds to benefit Elks Charities. Come and enjoy the fun.

Zumba classes will begin Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. with Lorraine Blanchard as the instructor. Come and burn some

calories and enjoy the fun.

Tri-City Elks Lodge Custom Car Show continues Sept. 24. The car show is around the back of the building near the Tiki Bar. Food and beverages will be sold during the show. Music is also provided. Come join the fun.

Sachem Pomham Descendants

The Warwick Historical Society’s guest speaker Jeff Howe will present a slideshow/talk about the possibility that Warwick’s Sachem Pomham had surviving descendants from King Phillip’s War that can be traced until the name disappears from records in the 1850s. The Pomham name is remembered in the Pomham lighthouse in Riverside and the monument erected in Warwick Neck. At the Warwick Public Library, Sandy Lane, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. All are welcome, admission free.

Art Space PAVA

Art Space PAVA is a newly formed non-profit organization which is an artist cooperative whose main purpose is to provide a venue to educate the local community, adults and children alike, have exhibits and performances, as well as provide work space for local artists. On Sept. 5 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. there will be an open registration for a variety of classes at the JONAH Community Center located at 830 Oakland Beach Avenue in Warwick. Just some of the classes being offered this fall semester are Duct Tape Construction, Mommy/Daddy and Me Art, Stainglass, Bucket Drumming, Beginner Chainmail Jewelry, Drawing Animal Caricatures, Creative Writing and Classical Russian Ballet. Bingo

Bingo will be held Sept. 5 at St. Kevins Church Hall, 333 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6, starting with a $100 special and ending with a $100 special.

A giant flea market and snack bar will be held Sept. 12 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., rain or shine, at Lakewood Baptist Church, 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick (off Warwick Ave.).

Table rentals: Lakewood Baptist Church is looking for people to rent tables for the giant flea market and snack bar from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Table rentals are $25 and all proceeds will go to Amy Smith for her mission trip next February to the Dominican Republic. “Vision of Hope” Cancer Walk

The 7th annual Kerri McClean “Vision of Hope” cancer walk to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families will be held, rain or shine, Sept. 13 at Warwick City Park on Asylum Road in Buttonwoods. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds go to the “Women in Need Fund” and the “Integrative Care Services Fund” programs at Women & Infants’ Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean, who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009. Complimentary reiki, reflexology, massage, chiropractic and astrology services will be offered. Refreshments will be provided. Endless Summer Painting Gathering

Endless Summer Painting Gathering will held Sept. 16 from 6:30-8:30 at the former Crompton Library, 1679 Main Street, West Warwick. Corned Beef Dinner

Adult Basketball Leagues

Registration is now open for Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick adult basketball leagues. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick is a premier recreational basketball league includes stats for all games in addition to shirts, college referees, message boards and convenient location. Leagues are continuous, every 15 weeks for individuals and teams alike. Every league has a 12-game regular season schedule, plus best of three finals. League fees include jerseys. Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
