Gorton High School Monthly Luncheon

The Gorton High School monthly luncheon will be held Sept. 9 at Chianti’s, 195 Old Forge Road, Warwick, at 12 noon.Cost is $16.All Gorton High School classmates from 1941-1955, spouses and friends are welcome. Call or e-mail Dot McGuinn at 463-9535 or mcguinn@cox.net if you plan to attend.

Tri-City Elks

Tri-City Elks Lodge Custom Car show continues in September on the 10th and the 24th! The car show is around the back of the building near the Tiki Bar. Food and beverages will be sold during the show. Music is also provided.

Pig Roast will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 beginning at 2 p.m. Roasted pig with all the fixins. Tickets are $20, and can be purchased at the bar. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Get your tickets early.

Country western dance lessons will begin on Sept. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. Lori Enos is the instructor, and the cost is $6 per person. Proceeds to benefit Elks Charities. Come and enjoy the fun.

Zumba classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. with Lorraine Blanchard as the instructor. Come and burn some calories.

Church Meat Raffle

St. Benedict Church is holding a meat raffle September 12, at 70 Transit St., Warwick, at 5 p.m. Meat loaf dinner, $10 per person, includes salad, meatloaf, scalloped potatoes, vegetable, ice cream and coffee. Giant Flea Market

A giant flea market and snack bar will be held Sept. 12 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., rain or shine, at Lakewood Baptist Church, 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick (off Warwick Ave.).

Table rentals: Lakewood Baptist Church is looking for people to rent tables for the giant flea market and snack bar from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Table rentals are $25 and all proceeds will go to Amy Smith for her mission trip next February to the Dominican Republic. “Vision of Hope”

Cancer Walk

The 7th annual Kerri McClean “Vision of Hope” cancer walk to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families will be held, rain or shine, Sept. 13 at Warwick City Park on Asylum Road in Buttonwoods. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds go to the “Women in Need Fund” and the “Integrative Care Services Fund” programs at Women & Infants’ Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean, who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009. Complimentary reiki, reflexology, massage, chiropractic and astrology services will be offered. Refreshments will be provided. The combined classes of 1950 and 1951 of Aldrich High School will hold their annual breakfast buffet on Saturday, Sept. 19. Trout Unlimited

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU225) will host its regular monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Coventry/West Greenwich Elks Lodge, 42 Nooseneck Hill Road (Rte. 3, Exit 6 off of Rte. 95), West Greenwich. This will be the first indoor meeting for TU225 for the Fall 2015/Winter 2016 Season. At this meeting, TU225 members and guests will enjoy hearing about the “The Little Things” (seemingly the minor factors that can make a big difference in your fishing results) from Steve Culton, an experienced fly fishing guide, professional fly tyer, and freelance writer from neighboring Connecticut. Steve’s passions include fishing for trout, stripers, steelhead, and in small streams with wild brookie populations. One flyfishing rod and a variety of fly tying materials will be available. Conimicut Village Hunger Walk

We invite you and your organization to participate in the 2015 West Bay CROP Hunger Walk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 in Conimicut Village. Hundreds of participants and teams from around the state will walk a 3-mile course through the village and down around the Point to raise money for and create awareness of those who go hungry in the U.S. and around the world. WMOA RI Open

Juried Exhibit

Warwick Museum of Art (WMOA) is pleased to present the 29th Annual RI Open Juried Exhibit now through Oct. 24. This exhibit explores an array of mediums and subject matter and features 50+ original works by 32 artists from across the region. Juror Françoise M. McAree, a renowned artist and the Fine and Applied Arts Coordinator at RISD, produces a great opportunity for local residents to get the “first look” at cutting edge artworks being produced in New England. Adult Basketball Leagues

Registration is now open for Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick adult basketball leagues. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick is a premier recreational basketball league includes stats for all games in addition to shirts, college referees, message boards and convenient location. Leagues are continuous, every 15 weeks for individuals and teams alike.

Every league has a 12-game regular season schedule, plus best of three finals. League fees include jerseys. Not included are ref fees and stat-keeper fees. Come join the fun at Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick, Norwood Branch and Oakland Beach Branch.

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
