Tri-City Elks

Country line dancing lessons continue every Monday from 7-9 p.m. Lori Enos is the instructor, and the cost is $6 per person. Proceeds to benefit Elks Charities.

Zumba lessons continue every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Lorraine Blanchard is the instructor. Come and burn some calories and enjoy the fun. Cost is $6 per person.

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Oct. 15 at The Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. This is the last meeting before the pasta supper on Nov. 7, so they need everyone to come. Book Signing at Barnes & Noble

Contributing editor of the recent “Homework and Family Stress Study” and author of the study’s sequential book, “The Learning Habit,” Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman will help celebrate Barnes & Noble’s National Educator Appreciation Week, Oct. 11-18, by signing copies of her best-selling book. She will be at the Barnes & Noble in Warwick Center, 1350 Bald Hill Road in Warwick, Oct. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Donaldson-Pressman has been a family therapist, lecturer and author for over 25 years, helping families and children deal with issues ranging from homework to sleep patterns. Her most recent study on homework found that primary age children are receiving three times the amount they should, putting undue stress on families lacking a college education. Donaldson-Pressman is the creator of “Empowerment Parenting,” the only technique proven to develop “grit” in children. During National Educator Appreciation Week, the store will offer 25 percent off publisher list prices, and other discounts.

Norwood Baptist Turkey Supper

Join Norwood Baptist Church Oct. 17 for their 63rd Annual Turkey Supper. Menu includes traditional harvest supper served buffet style, rolls, sliced roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, whipped potatoes, butternut squash, green beans, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, milk, juice and pie. Pet Refuge Silent Auction

The Pet Refuge a non-profit, no-kill Animal Shelter located on 500 Stony Lane, North Kingstown is holding their 9th annual silent auction Oct. 17 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Cold Spring Community Center, 30 Beach Street, Wickford. Offered for bidding are many collectibles, artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, gifts, handmade items and many more great silent auction items. There will also be a raffle table with many nice prizes. Admission is free. Make it a great night out and enjoy a wonderful buffet with delicious food, including beverages and desserts for $15 per person. Children under 5 are free, children under 12 $5. Trunk or Treat

Trunk or Treat will be held in Oakland Beach Oct. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Free admission for visitors. Family fun, kids and adults in costume, DJ Car-Guy musical host. Cars $2 for children’s charity.

Roast Pork Supper

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave., is having an all you can eat roast pork supper Oct. 17 from 4:30-7 pm. The menu includes roast pork and gravy, potatoes, vegetables, salad, bread & butter, beverages and homemade desserts. Cost for adults is $12, children 12 years and under is $4. Children 5 and under are free. 

St. William Flea Market

Chopstick Auction

The Oakland Beach Volunteer Women’s Auxiliary will have their annual chopstick auction Oct. 17. Doors open at 12:30, the auction begins at 1 p.m. A chopstick for $10 will get you in all the drawings. They can be purchased at the door. Hotdogs, pizza, pastry & coffee will be available to purchase along with a cash bar. Limited seating, first 100 people get seats. Adults only please.

Ladies Auxiliary Comedy Night

Free Lunch

Conimicut Village Hunger Walk

We invite you and your organization to participate in the 2015 West Bay CROP Hunger Walk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 in Conimicut Village. Hundreds of participants and teams from around the state will walk a 3-mile course through the village and down around the Point to raise money for and create awareness of those who go hungry in the U.S. and around the world. Winman Fundraiser

The Winman PTO will be hosting a fundraiser at the Warwick Not Your Average Joe’s on the next four Tuesday’s. The dates are Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3. Folks can visit for lunch or dinner, take out or dine in and can ask their server for the Winman flyer. The Winman PTO will receive 15 percent of the total check.

Gaspee Seniors

On Oct. 20 the Gaspee Seniors will be meeting at the Buttonwoods Community Center for our Halloween party and penny pitch. Orange and black will be the colors of the day; costumes are optional. They will be collecting food for Westbay Market Place at this meeting. Call Mary Nolan at 941-5507.

Ocean State Toastmasters

Identifying Scamming

On Oct. 21 the St. Timothy Church Women’s Club is sponsoring an evening with a representative of the Attorney General’s Office who will speak on how to identify scamming. Junior High School Parent Presentation

All Warwick parents are welcome to attend a short program entitled “Drugs, Addiction and Your Teen,” presented by School Resource Officer Nelson Carreiro and Student Assistance Counselor, Marge Johnson Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Winman Junior High School. Coffee and refreshments will be served. Children are welcome.

International Arts & Crafts Festival

WMOA RI Open Juried Exhibit

Warwick Museum of Art (WMOA) is pleased to present the 29th Annual RI Open Juried Exhibit now through Oct. 24. This exhibit explores an array of mediums and subject matter and features 50+ original works by 32 artists from across the region. Juror Françoise M. McAree, a renowned artist and the Fine and Applied Arts Coordinator at RISD, produces a great opportunity for local residents to get the “first look” at cutting edge artworks being produced in New England. Pumpkin Spook-Tacular

A Pumpkin Spook-Tacular will be held Oct. 24 in the center of Conimicut Village at the intersection of West Shore Road and Beach Avenue. Everyone is invited to carve a pumpkin at home and bring it to 765 West Shore Road (Friends Way parking lot) between 2-4:30 p.m. Lighting and display of the pumpkins will be from 6-9 p.m. There will be games, a scavenger hunt and treats for a ghastly good time. The event is coordinated by Woodbury Union Church and supported by the Conimicut Village Association and William Shields Post.

St. Benedict Church Italian Festival

St. Benedict’s Church is holding an Italian festival Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in The Parish Center at 70 Transit St., Warwick. The center is handicapped accessible. Delicious Italian buffet dinner including but not limited to chicken parmigiana, pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, coffee and dessert. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 children. Beer and wine available for a donation. St. Mark’s Raffle Tickets

Twenty-week raffle tickets on sale at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Tickets are $20 each. All proceeds support the mission and ministry of the church. Adult Basketball Leagues

Registration is now open for Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick adult basketball leagues. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick is a premier recreational basketball league includes stats for all games in addition to shirts, college referees, message boards and convenient location. Leagues are continuous, every 15 weeks for individuals and teams alike. Every league has a 12-game regular season schedule, plus best of three finals. League fees include jerseys. Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Free Pet Food

Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
