Academic Award Scholarships

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces that its Academic & Community Achievement Award applications for 2013 are now available. This $500 scholarship is for high school seniors who are residents of Warwick. The Lions Club is dedicated to the concept of community service, and these awards are weighted towards students who have demonstrated a legacy of community service. Application deadline is May 15. To receive an application contact the guidance office at your school or request one in writing from Ron Bergeron, Scholarship Chairman, 106 Wilson Ave., Warwick, RI 02889.

Scholarship Applications

The James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by JONAH Inc, are now available. Any graduating high school senior living in the Oakland Beach school district are eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be returned by May 22. For applications call Beverlee Sturdahl at 739-2219.

Pilgrim Senior Center Events

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

CPR Class

AARP Income Tax Preparation

Trained AARP volunteers will be at the center to help seniors and low-income individuals with income tax filing. Appointments are necessary by calling the Welcome Desk at 468-4071. Appointments are on Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. until April 12 and will be filed electronically. There is not an option for paper filing this year at the center.

Veterans Assistance Program

If you are a U.S. veteran, you may be eligible for some benefits. Ron Plante from the Veterans Administration will be available April 24 from 9-11:30 am. If you would like to meet with him, call Kathleen at 468-4084 for an appointment.

Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Meadowlark Seniors

The Meadowlark Seniors will meet April 11 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Kevin’s Hall. A grocery bingo will follow the meeting. Bakers are Barbara Lundh, Betty Marrocco and Kate Marshall.

Frank Santorelli

See Frank Santorelli perform at the Comedy Connection in East Providence April 12 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and most of the proceeds will go to the American Lung Association if they are purchased though Scott Shippee. Tickets must be purchased by April 5.

Oakland Beach Assn. Meeting

The Oakland Beach Association will hold their monthly meeting Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Flea Market/Bake Sale

Sparrows Point III will have a flea market/bake sale April 13 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with food and beverages. Location is 355 Harding Road, Warwick. Enter at 777 Cowesett Rd., second building on left.

R.I. Kennel Club

The Rhode Island Kennel Club, Inc. will hold a dog show and obedience and rally trials April 13 and 14 at William Thayer Arena, 925 Sandy Lane, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Admissions is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 10.

Spaghetti Supper

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave., is having an all you can eat spaghetti supper April 13 from 4:30-7 p.m. Menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, sausage, bread and butter, beverages and homemade desserts. Cost of adults is $8 and $4 for children 12 and under. Children under 5 are free.

Master Plan Meeting

The Oakland Beach Association will hold a Master Plan meeting Sunday, April 14, from 1-3 p.m. at JONAH, 830 Oakland Beach Ave. Items for discussion include the usage of the Community Development Block Grant funds. For more information contact Becky at 732-9014.

Warwick Animal Shelter

The Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will hold their general meeting April 18 at the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane starting at 6:30 p.m. They will have a wrap-up discussion about their upcoming breakfast and finalize plans for a craft show in May. Puppet Show

There will be a puppet show with Miss Joan for adults and children immediately following the April 21 service at Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Ave., in the fellowship hall. Refreshments will be provided. This is a postponement of the scheduled April 7 performance.

Swinging Squares

Swinging Squares of RI square dance workshops will be held on Mondays April 15, 22, 29 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the  East Smithfield Neighborhood Center, 7 Esmond St., Smithfield. Fee is $6 per person. Caller is Bob Butler, cuer is Henry Barry. Contact Louise at 724-7295 for more information.

Rummage Sale

The First Baptist Church of East Greenwich, located on the corners of Peirce and Montrose streets, will have its spring rummage sale April 12 from 4-8 p.m. and April 13 from 8 a.m. until noon. The clothes are all sizes and the household articles, even small furniture and electrical items, are in very good condition. They will have books, toys, shoes and bags, linens and so much more.

Coventry Harmonica Band

Trudeau Memorial Center welcomes back the Conventry Harmonica Band April 12 at 1:15 p.m. in the Patterson Vocational Building cafeteria. The talented musicians provide limitless entertainment using harmonica, song and comedy.

Fisherman’s Breakfast

Summit Baptist Church, 1176 Victory Highway, Greene, is having a fisherman’s breakfast Saturday, April 13, serving 4-11 a.m. East-in or take-out. Start the day with a hearty breakfast of eggs, home fries, sausage and more. Also take a snack to go for mid-morning and stop in later after your catch to fuel up for the ride home.

Bingo

There will be a bingo at St. Kevin’s Church Hall, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick, on April 13. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6 p.m. Fun, prizes and refreshments.

Sunday Bingo

There will be a Sunday bingo at the Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway, April 14. Doors open at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Ample parking, air-conditioned, refreshments available. Minimum of 34 winners.

Norwood Neighborhood Assn.

A general meeting will be held Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. Representative David Bennett will be the guest speaker and will provide an update on state and local government initiatives. Former Council President Bruce Place will review status on housing issues in Norwood. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Ladies Golf League

Ladies are sought for a Tuesday morning golf league at Harbor Light Country Club, 150 Gray St, in Warwick Neck. Everyone is welcome. Sign-up day is April 19 at the Buttonwoods Senior Center on West Shore Road from 2-3 p.m. Opening day if May 7 and runs until Sept. 24. Call Nancy at 737-0515 or the clubhouse at 681-4133.

Earth Day Clean-up

The Buckeye Brook Coalition is holding an Earth Day cleanup Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m.-12:00 noon (rain date if Saturday is a washout), and Sunday, April 21, from 1-4 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Registration starts at 8:45 on Saturday.  Volunteers are divided into groups under the leadership of team captains, who will bring their groups to their locations throughout the watershed. You will be supplied with bags to retrieve litter. Dress weather-appropriate and bring gloves, as the supplied gloves go quickly. Certificates will be available upon request for volunteer hours. Conimicut Spring Fling

Tickets are now on sale for the Conimicut Village Association Spring Fling Fundraiser. The annual event funds the cost of the beautiful flowers that decorate the village historic light poles every summer. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tri-City Elks Lodge on West Shore Road and includes dinner, music, silent auction and raffle items and door prizes. Tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for children and may be purchased at West Shore Carpets, 752 West Shore Road. Call 737-5559 for more information.

Comedy Night

There will be a Comedy Night April 26 at the William Shields Post, 662 West Shore Road. Dinner served from 7:30-8:30 p.m., show starts at 8:30. Dinner menu includes chicken, mashed potato, green beans, salad and bread. $25 per person, for tickets call 737-9711 or see the bartender.

Fundraiser Breakfast

Warwick Association for Affordable Assisted Living “At You Service” program is having a fundraiser breakfast at Dave’s Bar & Grille, 2339 Post Road, Warwick, April 27 from 7:30-10 a.m. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, breads, fruit, coffee, juice, custom omelets and more. &8 for adults, $5 for kids and under, babies under 2 are free. Tri City Elks

Tri City Elks #14, 1519 West Shore Rd., Warwick, will be holding their 5th annual fishing derby for boys and girls ages 5-12 April 27 at 7 a.m. Stop in at the lodge after 3 p.m. to sign your kids up. A fishing pole will be awarded to the child who catches the largest fish and the child who catches the second largest. Fish weigh-in is at 11 a.m. Hotdogs, chips and soda will follow.

OSCIL Breakfast

The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) will be celebrating 25 years of service to the disability community at a celebratory breakfast to be held April 30 from 9-11 a.m. at the Radisson Airport Hotel, Warwick. The Honorable James Langevin, House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker. The cost is $25 per person; tables of 10 are also available. Sponsorships are most welcome. The Village Singers

Gaspee Seniors

On the first and third Tuesday of every month, the Gaspee Seniors will be meeting at the Buttonwoods Community Center, West Shore Road, Warwick, at 1:15 pm. New members are more than welcome. Come and join the fun.
