Academic Award Scholarships

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces that its Academic & Community Achievement Award applications for 2013 are now available. This $500 scholarship is for high school seniors who are residents of Warwick. The Lions Club is dedicated to the concept of community service, and these awards are weighted towards students who have demonstrated a legacy of community service. Application deadline is May 15. To receive an application contact the guidance office at your school or request one in writing from Ron Bergeron, Scholarship Chairman, 106 Wilson Ave., Warwick, RI 02889.

Scholarships Applications

The James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by JONAH Inc, are now available. Any graduating high school senior living in the Oakland Beach school district are eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be returned by May 22. For applications call Beverlee Sturdahl at 739-2219.

Pilgrim Senior Center Events

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Veterans Assistance Program

If you are a U.S. veteran, you may be eligible for some benefits. Ron Plante from the Veterans Administration will be available April 24 from 9-11:30 am. If you would like to meet with him, call Kathleen at 468-4084 for an appointment.

Property Tax Relief

If you need assistance with preparing the 1040H form for Property Tax Relief, you can schedule an appointment with Kim at 468-4500. She will inform you of what paperwork to bring at the time of the appointment.

Zumba Gold

Have some fun with exercise and join the party. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance fitness class that incorporates international and Latin music with freeing, stress-relieving movements. It is great for the mind, body and soul; any age or fitness level is welcome. This class is held Tuesday mornings at 8:50 a.m. and the fee is $3 per class.

Zumba/Toning

This is a Zumba class using weights for toning and is held on Mondays at 6 p.m. and the fee is $45 for a 10-week session. You can register and pre-pay at the welcome desk. For more information call Holly at 468-4074.

Ceramics 12:30-3 p.m. Are you interested in trying something new? We have an instructor ready to guide you through a project or to just be there ready to help. This group meets Tuesdays at 12:30-3pm, $4 per class. No sign-up necessary.  

Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will hold their general meeting April 18 at the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane starting at 6:30 p.m.  They will have a wrap-up discussion about their upcoming breakfast and finalize plans for a craft show in May. Norwood Neighborhood Assn.

A general meeting will be held Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. Representative David Bennett will be the guest speaker and will provide an update on state and local government initiatives. Former Council President Bruce Place will review status on housing issues in Norwood. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Ladies Golf League

Ladies are sought for a Tuesday morning golf league at Harbor Light Country Club, 150 Gray St, in Warwick Neck. Everyone is welcome. Earth Day Clean-up

The Buckeye Brook Coalition is holding an Earth Day cleanup Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m.-12:00 noon (rain date if Saturday is a washout), and Sunday, April 21, from 1-4 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Registration starts at 8:45 on Saturday.  Volunteers are divided into groups under the leadership of team captains, who will bring their groups to their locations throughout the watershed. You will be supplied with bags to retrieve litter. Dress weather-appropriate and bring gloves, as the supplied gloves go quickly. Certificates will be available upon request for volunteer hours. Conimicut Spring Fling

Tickets are now on sale for the Conimicut Village Association Spring Fling Fundraiser. The annual event funds the cost of the beautiful flowers that decorate the village historic light poles every summer. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tri-City Elks Lodge on West Shore Road and includes dinner, music, silent auction and raffle items and door prizes. Tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for children and may be purchased at West Shore Carpets, 752 West Shore Road. Call 737-5559 for more information.

Puppet Show

There will be a puppet show with Miss Joan for adults and children immediately following the April 21 service at Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Ave., in the fellowship hall. Refreshments will be provided. This is a postponement of the scheduled April 7 performance.

Swinging Squares

Swinging Squares of RI square dance workshops will be held on Mondays April 22, 29 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the  East Smithfield Neighborhood Center, 7 Esmond St., Smithfield. Fee is $6 per person. Caller is Bob Butler, cuer is Henry Barry. Contact Louise at 724-7295 for more information.

Fundraiser Breakfast

Warwick Association for Affordable Assisted Living “At You Service” program is having a fundraiser breakfast at Dave’s Bar & Grille, 2339 Post Road, Warwick, April 27 from 7:30-10 a.m. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, breads, fruit, coffee, juice, custom omelets and more. &8 for adults, $5 for kids and under, babies under 2 are free. Tri City Elks

Tri City Elks #14, 1519 West Shore Rd., Warwick, will be holding their 5th annual fishing derby for boys and girls ages 5-12 April 27 at 7 a.m. Stop in at the lodge after 3 p.m. to sign your kids up. A fishing pole will be awarded to the child who catches the largest fish and the child who catches the second largest. Fish weigh-in is at 11 a.m. Hotdogs, chips and soda will follow.

OSCIL Breakfast

The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) will be celebrating 25 years of service to the disability community at a celebratory breakfast to be held April 30 from 9-11 a.m. at the Radisson Airport Hotel, Warwick. The Honorable James Langevin, House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker. The cost is $25 per person; tables of 10 are also available. Sponsorships are most welcome. The Village Singers

Grief Support

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center's new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids. Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse. Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care. If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including a mammogram and gynecological care.

Today's children need positive, caring adult role models to help them develop confidence, self-esteem and a desire to stay in school. Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values. Grange where the whole family can go and grow. Help them to help others. The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child's development and offers information about community resources. Free Sunday Lunch

Rhode Island Pet Bird Club

Photographic Society of RI

Donate Shop

The Donate Shop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit thrift store that provides free clothing to families in crisis. They are an all-volunteer organization that relies solely on the support of the community to continue this endeavor. The shop has a new location at 400 Warwick Ave., Unit #14, between Dunkin Donuts and Shaw's. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The phone number is 533-9944, the website is www.thedonateshop.org and “Like” them on Facebook for special updates.

Gambling Counseling Offered

Bridgemark now offers individual, group and family counseling for problem gambling. If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulties as a result of gambling, call for discreet and confidential assistance, 781-2700. Deaf services are also available; call their videophone number 1-866-730-9573.

Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Fife & Drum Corps

Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Fife & Drum Corps meets every Wednesday night at Wyman Elementary School from 6:30-8 p.m. The corps is open to anyone over the age of 12. Drum and fife instruction is available to beginners.
