Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Gorton Orientation Nights

Gorton Junior High School will be hosting orientation nights for all incoming 7th grade students Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. They will be set up in front of the main office hallway, which is right at the main front entrance of the school. The students will receive their schedules, locker assignments, directions on how to open lockers and maps of the building. With the schedule and map in hand, families can see where the students’ rooms are located. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to take a look at the schedule and locations of the rooms in advance and to ask any questions. You will also be able to hand in the school physical/immunization forms if they are completed. The PTO will be accepting new membership on this evening, and they will have information on school fundraising events.

Crime Watch Meeting

The Oakland Beach Crime Watch August meeting will be held Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at JONAH Community Center, 830 Oakland Beach Ave. The citizens from the Buttonwoods neighborhood have been attending to learn how to start their own neighborhood watch. If any other Warwick communities would like to start a watch group, you are welcome to come to the meeting.

Pilgrim Orientation

The staff and students of Pilgrim High School invite the Class of 2017 and new students to orientation and an ice cream social Aug. 22 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the school. All incoming 9th graders will receive their schedule that evening and meet with student leaders as they tour the building and discuss what makes a Patriot successful. Parents are invited to the auditorium for a short program before all meet back for the ice cream social.

Tin Cup Junior Camps

Tin Cup Golf Course & Driving Range in Coventry. August Camp: Friday August 23, 10 a.m.-12 noon. Ages 7 to 17 eligible. All aspects of the game will be covered, including driving, full swing, pitching, chipping, putting, rules & etiquette. Fun tourney, lunch & prizes on final day of each camp. Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner

Enjoy a spaghetti and meatball meal while helping fulfill Jason’s lifelong dream of a trip to Disney World with his family. Jason has lived with cystic fibrosis. The event will be held Aug. 25 from 2-6 p.m. at the Fireman’s Oakland Beach Club, 645 Oakland Beach Ave. The menu will include spaghetti with sauce, meatballs, Italian bread, salad with dressing, dessert and coffee. There will be a cash bar, a 50/50 raffle and prize raffles. Adults cost $15, kids $10, kids under 6 eat free. All donations are accepted and appreciated. Call Artie at 256-9481 for questions.

Car Wash

The Cranston Cyclones will be holding a car wash at the Buttonwoods Senior Center, corner of West Shore Road and Buttonwoods Ave., Aug. 25 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $5; donations are welcome.

5K Run/Walk

The 3rd Annual Realtor 5K Run/Walk for Habitat for Humanity will be at the Quonset “O” Club, North Kingstown, Aug. 25. Registration is at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. race, 11 a.m. 1K Kids’ Dash followed by barbecue/awards ceremony. $20 registration fee. Pilgrim Senior Center Trips

The Tuesday Pilgrim Senior Center singing group is sponsoring the following trips: Aug. 30, a seven-night cruise to Bermuda with ex-mayor Buddy Cianci. Also, a nine-night cruise to Puerto Rico, Bermuda, St. Marteen and Haiti on April 24-May 3. Call Diane at 738-8588 for prices.

Blood Drive

There will be a blood drive at the Church of Christ the King Church Hall, 124 Legris Ave., West Warwick, Sept. 4 from 4-7 p.m. “Give the Gift of Life.”

Fall Ladies Instructional League

Fall Ladies Only Instructional League at Tin Cup Golf Course will be held Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4 and 11. The Summer League is a huge success, so they are having a Fall League for those who enjoy the cooler temperatures. The league starts with a Sept. 6 clinic. Six holes of on-the-course instruction & league play each week begins Sept. 13 Fridays at 11 a.m. Lunch and prizes on Oct. 11. Featuring Rhode Island’s top golf instructors. Bingo

Bingo will be held at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane, Sept. 7. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6. Air-conditioned, fun, prizes, refreshments.

Memorial Cancer Walk

The fifth annual Kerri McClean Memorial Cancer Walk to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families will be held Sept. 8 at Warwick City Park on Asylum Road. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds go to “Women in Need” and “Integrative Care Service” programs at Women & Infants’ Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean, who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009. Complimentary Reiki, reflexology, massage, chiropractic and astrology services will be offered. Refreshments will be provided. Baskets and gist cards will be raffled. $25 registration fee; survivors walk free. For more information call 463-7895.

Goodwill Collecting Electronics

On Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island will be collecting donations of old electronics, clothing, leather goods and small toys at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Peirce Street, East Greenwich. Goodwill takes all items that have a plug, including TVs, even if they no longer work. One hundred percent of the revenue generated from this program helps to provide job training, education and social services that result in employment and economic opportunities for residents of Rhode Island with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Moving and Shaking Zumbathon

There will be a Moving and Shaking Zumbathon in memory of Hortence Cotta Sept. 14 from 9-11 a.m. at Elks Tri-City Lodge #14, 1915 West Shore Road. Tickets can be purchased at the door for a $10 donation or register online at webri.alsa.org/site/TR?px-1623506&fr_id9394&pg=personal.

Steak Fry

Saints Rose & Clement Parish will be hosting a steak fry Sept. 14 in the church hall. Come and enjoy a delicious dinner of steak, baked potato, mixed veggies and dessert. Cocktails (cash bar) will begin at 6:15 p.m., dinner at 7:15. Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased at the Parish Office or by calling 739-0212.

St. Rita’s Autumn Bazaar

St. Rita’s Women’s Club is looking for vendors for their autumn bazaar, to be held Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at St. Rita’s Church. Tables cost $20. Call Joan at 739-0239.

Girl Scouts Registration

Registration for Girl Scouts for the school year 2013-2014 can be done online at www.gsri.org. Girls entering kindergarten through grade 12 may register. Both renewal registrations and new registrations are accepted. All girls will be placed in troops during the summer and early fall. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. The Village Singers

The Village Singers, an adult vocal ensemble, is seeking new members for all voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Scandinavian Home, Broad St., Cranston.
