Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become a member and volunteer. Tri City Elks Events

Pre-New Year’s Eve Bash Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. $25 per person. Music from the Here Again Band. Menu will be roast beef, mushroom gravy, 2 baked stuffed shrimp, baked potato, vegetable and salad. Purchase your tickets by Dec. 22.

The GFWC Warwick Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Elizabeth Buffum Chase Center, Warwick. Members will be providing Christmas gifts for two families less fortunate. Applying to College

Made Easy

Warwick Public Library will be hosting a college informational seminar Dec. 12 from 6-8 p.m. in the large meeting room. Join us as we discuss the complex world of college admissions. This free presentation will offer information, guidelines and tips to make this difficult journey more manageable. Included will be a handy to-do list for parents and students in grades 9-12 as well as pertinent financial insights for anyone considering college. Christmas Concert

Saints Rose and Clement Parish will host their annual Christmas concert Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the church, 111 Long St., featuring the Ss. Rose and Clement adult choir and children’s chorus, Bishop Hendricken String Orchestra and Young Men’s Chorus and St. Rita’s Parish Choir. Tickets are $3 for adults, children 6 and under are free, and may be purchased at the door. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Meat Raffle

American Legion Post #2, 2 Legion Way, West Warwick, is hosting a Christmas turkey and ham meat raffle Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. This event is to the public. All proceeds benefit American Legion charities. For more information call 821-9855.

Stone Ridge

Candlelight Tour

The Stone Ridge Neighborhood Association (located in East Greenwich) will be holding its annual Luminaria Dec. 14 from 5-9 p.m. with a rain date of Dec. 15. This is a long-standing neighborhood tradition spanning over 25 years. The neighborhood provides an outdoor display for the holidays, which includes traditional holiday decorations and thousands of paper bag lanterns decorating curbs, driveways and walkways.  Last year the neighborhood was lined with over 3,000 lit lanterns. People from all over Rhode Island come to slowly drive through the neighborhood with headlights dimmed. Follow Middle Road west of Route 2 to second right (Stone Ridge Drive).

Free Concert

There will be a free concert of Handel’s “Messiah” at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 9 New London Ave., West Warwick, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. The church has handicapped parking and accessibility. A free will offering will be accepted at the concert. The concert will include Part I - The Christmas Story and the Hallelujah Chorus and will feature four prominent Rhode Island soloists with a 40-voice choir. The vocalists for this choral masterpiece will be accompanied by a professional string quartet and harpsichord. Handel’s “Messiah” is arguably the most popular and frequently performed choral work since its first performance for charity in Dublin, Ireland in 1742. Celebrate the Christmas season with a concert of this traditional, choral masterpiece.

Ocean State

Toastmasters Meeting

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Dec. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of some 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. Nature’s Gifts Exhibit

Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, is looking for compelling photographic images of the natural world for an exhibit called “Nature’s Gifts” that will run through Dec. 21 in the main gallery. The beauty and grandeur of nature in its many forms will be showcased with framed works, notecards and prints. All photographers who live in New England are welcome to submit .jpegs for consideration, including students enrolled in undergrad or graduate art studies. All framed fine art photographs and other items in the show are for sale, perfectly timed for holiday gifts or updating your home or office, and 40 percent of your purchase helps Warwick’s only cultural arts center. Starting Dec. 1, there’s no sales tax on purchases of original art created in Rhode Island. This includes the framed photographs and items in the main gallery show – another incentive to purchase artwork this holiday season.

Traditional Christmas

Music Concert

Our Lady of Grace Church, 4 Lafayette St., Johnston, is holding an afternoon of traditional Christmas music as we celebrate the Christmas season. This concert features Triton Brass, whose members have played with groups such as the Boston Pops, Boston Symphony Orchestra and on many of the leading Broadway shows. The choir includes some of the most talented vocalists from the Southern New England region who have come together with Triton Brass to perform the most loved Christmas music of all time. Tickets for the concert are $10, and the first 250 tickets sold will include an Italian pasta and polenta dinner following the concert in the church hall. Pilgrim Senior Center Trips

The Tuesday Pilgrim Senior Center singing group is sponsoring a nine-night cruise to Puerto Rico, Bermuda, St. Marteen and Haiti on April 24-May 3, 2014. Call Diane at 738-8588 for prices.

Hi-Lo-Jack League

Clothing Drive

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State is seeking donations of gently-used clothing and small household items. Donations help to raise much-needed funding to support mentoring programs for boys and girls throughout the state. They offer convenient home pick-up of donations and provide a tax receipt. For more information or to schedule a home pick-up call 921-2434 or visit www.bbbsos.org.

West Bay Chorale

The West Bay Chorale welcomes new and former members, male and female, all ages.
