Warwick Historical Society

Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that Preschool registration for the 2014/2015 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session to families. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Hoxsie, Wickes and Norwood areas. If you are or know of a family with a child who will be 4 years old by September 1 and are interested in this program, call Carol Maloney at 734-3426 or email at Maloneyc@warwickschools.org.

Conimicut Village Memorial Bricks

The Conimicut Village Association is still accepting orders for memorial bricks. Bricks can be used to commemorate a life event or to honor a person, living or deceased. The engraved bricks are installed along the walkway at the scenic overlook at the ocean end of Beach Avenue. Steak Fry

Support the East Greenwich Animal Protection League at the first Summer Kick-Off Steak Fry on May 23. Enjoy a steak dinner with summer favorites, a cash bar and music by Ray Renzi. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. at the William Shields Post of the American Legion, 650 West Shore Road, Warwick. Narragansett Spring Scramble For SIDS

The Narragansett Spring Scramble For SIDS will take place May 23 with an 8 a.m. start at North Kingstown Public Golf Course. Soft spikes only; $125 per player included continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m., group & individual prizes, awards ceremony, raffles, longest drive, closest to the pin, putting contest, cart, streak fry with a special presentation to honor Eagle. Mixed groups welcome. Raffle with a chance to win a golf vacation in Catskills worth $500.

SPRED Liturgy

St. Benedict’s Parish, 135 Beach Ave., will hold a SPRED Liturgy at the 4 p.m. Mass on May 24. SPRED (Special Religious Development) is a religious program for the physically- or mentally-challenged. They have special friends from St. Benedict’s, St. Kevin’s, St. Timothy’s, St. Mary’s in Cranston, St. Francis of Assisi. St. Gregory the Great, St. Clement’s as well as St. Francis de Sales who will be preparing the altar and bringing the gifts during the Mass. All are welcome to attend the Mass and the open house that will follow, where refreshments will be served in the Parish Hall.

Toy Yard Sale

The Armenian Evangelical Church, 180 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, is holding its annual toy yard sale May 24 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Choose from a wide selection of toys, books, games and tapes. Rain date is May 31.

Giant Yard Sale

There will be a giant indoor/outdoor yard sale May 24 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Trinity Church, 139 Ocean Ave., Cranston. Lunch will be served at noon.

Plant & Yard Sale

The divorce group is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Sampson Air Force Base Meeting

The monthly meeting of Sampson Air Force Base Veterans will be held May 27 at 1300 hours. All Air Force veterans, especially Sampson AFB vets, are welcome to the Sampson AFB Veterans Squadron. St. Benedict’s Church

100th Anniversary Gala

On Sept. 27 St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Avenue, will be having their 100th anniversary gala. It will begin with 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by a spectacular celebration in the newly refurbished and handicapped accessible Parish Center. The church is looking for former priests, deacons, principals, nuns, teachers, students, choir members and former and present parishioners. They would like your pictures and past history to make this a memorable and uplifting event not only for the parish but also the faith community. 7th Annual Classic Car Show

The 7th Annual “Cause for Paws” Classic Car Show will take place June 8 at 171 Service Place, located at 171 Service Rd. (off Jefferson Blvd.), Warwick. Rain date is July 20. Antique cars, classic cars to 1989, rods, muscle cars and all-year Corvettes are invited to exhibit. Vehicle registration is from 9 a.m.-12 noon, with free goody bags and dash plaques to the first 100 entries. The entry fee is $15 per car. Spectators are free to roam the show. Enjoy oldies music by Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer. Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. in 28 classes, including Best of Show, Peoples Choice and Best Club Participation. Cruise Nights

Every Tuesday until September, the Greater Warwick Lions will be holding Cruising with the Oldies at Oakland Beach in Warwick from 4 p.m. to dusk. Sweet antique cars, DJ Dom playing the oldies, food vendors, raffles and prizes all with an ocean view. All proceeds benefit the Lions’ charities, Ronald McDonald House, children with cancer, Insight, children and adults in the community in need of glasses, scholarships awarded to Warwick students and JONAH. Photographic Society of RI

Grief Support Group

Those who are suffering from the loss of a loved one are welcome to come to one or all of the grief support sessions that will be held at the Christ Church Office Condo (61 Cedar Ave., Unit 6, East Greenwich) every Sunday from 2-4 p.m. through June 1. The meetings will begin with a video featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors covering a variety of topics to help you deal with your grief, followed by discussion and sharing. Summer Internships for College Students

College students are still being interviewed for summer internships, and Warwick Museum of Art is especially interested in education majors who enjoy working with children for its Summer Art Camp, and communications majors who want real-world experience writing articles, press releases and Facebook posts. These are unpaid internships, but WMOA is participating in a state-run program that provides small stipends for students who attend out-of-state colleges. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Village Singers
