Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Tri-City Elks

Tiki Bar Party July 25 at 6 p.m. Quesadillas, nachos, chili, fish and other tacos. Many lodge specials as well. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased in the lounge Monday to Thursday after 3 p.m. and Friday to Sunday after noon. Come join the fun.

Country line dancing with Tami has ended for the summer and will resume again on Monday, Sept. 18.

Art Camp Sessions Open Next Week

Keep your kids busy next week at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, with creative art camp sessions taught by talented, experienced  instructors:

* International Arts and Crafts: ages 6-12 can explore cultures and create artwork with instructor Rebecca Stockdill.

* Jewelry Making: ages 6-12 can make friendship bracelets, necklaces and wearable items with instructor Heather Place.

Camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Three different art sessions a day for the entire week and registration is easy by phone with MasterCard or Visa. Other camp sessions are also available, but call today for best selection. Call 737-0010.

Summer Night Concert Series

The Apponaug Area Improvement Association presents its 4th Annual Music for a Summer Night Concert Series on the front steps of Warwick City Hall 6:30-8 p.m. The schedule is as follows: July 24 Saucy Jack Band Acoustic Rock; August 7 Bobby Justin Classic Rock ’n Roll; Aug. 21 Ten Rod Ramblers Blues & Rock. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Friendship Hall of Warwick Central Baptist Church Hall across from City Hall.

Free Community Lunch

A free community lunch and food pantry will be held July 26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. All are welcome. Please don’t arrive before 11 a.m. RIPTA #3 Warwick Ave – Hoxsie Four Corners stop at West Shore Nursing Home next to St. Mark’s.

Slip Stream

Trudeau Memorial Center welcomes back Slip Stream July 28 at 1:15 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Patterson building. Nathan Hoogasian is an accomplished pianist and songwriter, while Parker Hoffman has been playing drums for over eight years. Together, the two members of Slip Stream create a musical exhibition that you will not soon forget.

Trout Unlimited

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited #225 will host its regular monthly meeting July 30 starting at 6 p.m. at the Arcadia Management Area Check Station, Exeter. Music at Conimicut Point Park

The Warwick Summer Concert Series comes to Conimicut Point Park July 30 from 6:30-8 pm. Come and listen to the classic rock and country sounds of Bayside Beat. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the view and the music.  Free admission.

Picture Book of Warwick History

The Warwick Historical Society and friends have begun creating a picture book of Warwick history for the Fonthill Media imprint of its “America Through Time” series. A meeting will be held at the Pontiac Library July 31 at 3:30 p.m. to solicit photographs and stories from Warwick residents. Those interested in helping with the book may come to the meeting, or send an e-mail to robert_geake@yahoo.com for information on future meetings as the book progresses.

Bingo

Bingo will be held Aug. 2 at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane, starting with a $75 special with the last special being $100. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6.

Music in the Village

Music in the Village will be held Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. at Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian, 58 Beach Ave. Admission is free; hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages and more available for purchase. Music provided by the Woodbury Chancel Choir, the Woodbury Music Club and Bayside Beat.

Auditions for Providence Singers

There will be auditions held for the Providence Singers, seeking tenors in particular, Aug. 5 by appointment only. To schedule, email chorus@providencesingers.org. The audition will be brief and encouraging and will consist of one song of your choice (a hymn is fine), guided vocalization to hear range and a bit of sight-reading. Financial Education Workshops

Home Loan Investment Bank along with the Center for Women & Enterprise will be hosting a financial education workshop, Borrowing Basics, Aug. 5 at Home Loan Investment Bank, Warwick. The workshop will run from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Hoxsie branch. By the end of this course, participants will understand how to use a checking account responsibly. Osteoarthritis Program

Are the aches and pains of osteoarthritis getting in the way of living life to the fullest? Put Pain in Its Place is a free, one-hour class that gives you the tools to manage your osteoarthritis (OA) pain and live better. Developed by the experts you trust at the Arthritis Foundation in conjunction with the National Council on Aging and sponsored by Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Inc., this program will help you understand OA, its causes and how to treat it; learn self-management strategies to prevent and relieve pain; get inspired to take action and get your pain under control; and find out about effective and safe exercises from the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that Preschool registration for the 2014/2015 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session to families. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Hoxsie, Wickes and Norwood areas. Cruise Nights

Every Tuesday until September, the Greater Warwick Lions will be holding Cruising with the Oldies at Oakland Beach in Warwick from 4 p.m. to dusk. Sweet antique cars, DJ Dom playing the oldies, food vendors, raffles and prizes all with an ocean view. All proceeds benefit the Lions’ charities, Ronald McDonald House, children with cancer, Insight, children and adults in the community in need of glasses, scholarships awarded to Warwick students and JONAH. Cruise Night is weather permitting; check the Warwick Lions Cruise Night website for cancellations.

Crafters Needed

Crafters needed for the annual Heritage Day event at the Paine House Museum located at 7 Station St., Coventry, on September 27. The price per table is $25. Tables are not available, so you will have to supply your own. There is limited space this year, so if you’re interested contact Sandy at 821-2444.

St. Benedict’s Church

100th Anniversary Gala

On Sept. 27 St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Avenue, will be having their 100th anniversary gala. It will begin with 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by a spectacular celebration in the newly refurbished and handicapped accessible Parish Center. The church is looking for former priests, deacons, principals, nuns, teachers, students, choir members and former and present parishioners. They would like your pictures and past history to make this a memorable and uplifting event not only for the parish but also the faith community. Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Fife & Drum Corps

Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Fife & Drum Corps meets every Wednesday night at Wyman Elementary School from 6:30-8 p.m. The corps is open to anyone over the age of 12. Drum and fife instruction is available to beginners.

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders Program hours are 4:40-8 p.m., making it accessible for people who work. Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew.
