Warwick Historical Society

The Warwick Historical Society meets weekly at the John Waterman Arnold House on Roger Williams Circle Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome and urged to become member and volunteer. Tri-City Elks

Art Camp Sessions Open Next Week

Keep your kids busy next week at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road, with creative art camp sessions taught by talented, experienced  instructors:

* International Arts and Crafts: ages 6-12 can explore cultures and create artwork with instructor Rebecca Stockdill.

* Jewelry Making: ages 6-12 can make friendship bracelets, necklaces and wearable items with instructor Heather Place.

Camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Three different art sessions a day for the entire week and registration is easy by phone with MasterCard or Visa. Other camp sessions are also available, but call today for best selection. Call 737-0010.

Summer Activities

The Summer Reading Program 2014 will be at the Pontiac Free Library for preschool through grade 6. Fizz, Boom, Fun on Friday, Aug. 1 anytime between 10 a.m.-12 noon; Dave Marchetti’s Animal Experiences Program Friday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. For more information call the library at 737-3292.

Trout Unlimited

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited #225 will host its regular monthly meeting July 30 starting at 6 p.m. at the Arcadia Management Area Check Station, Exeter. This will be the chapter’s third Stream-Side Meetings at the Check Station. Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages will be available. All members and guests welcomed. Music at Conimicut Point Park

The Warwick Summer Concert Series comes to Conimicut Point Park July 30 from 6:30-8 pm. Come and listen to the classic rock and country sounds of Bayside Beat. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the view and the music.  Free admission.

Picture Book of Warwick History

The Warwick Historical Society and friends have begun creating a picture book of Warwick history for the Fonthill Media imprint of its “America Through Time” series. A meeting will be held at the Pontiac Library July 31 at 3:30 p.m. to solicit photographs and stories from Warwick residents. Those interested in helping with the book may come to the meeting, or send an e-mail to robert_geake@yahoo.com for information on future meetings as the book progresses.

Bingo

Bingo will be held Aug. 2 at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane, starting with a $75 special with the last special being $100. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6.

Music in the Village

Music in the Village will be held Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. at Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian, 58 Beach Ave. Admission is free; hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages and more available for purchase. Music provided by the Woodbury Chancel Choir, the Woodbury Music Club and Bayside Beat.

Auditions for Providence Singers

There will be auditions held for the Providence Singers, seeking tenors in particular, Aug. 5 by appointment only. To schedule, email chorus@providencesingers.org. The audition will be brief and encouraging and will consist of one song of your choice (a hymn is fine), guided vocalization to hear range and a bit of sight-reading. Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Aug. 5 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island. Financial Education Workshops

Home Loan Investment Bank along with the Center for Women & Enterprise will be hosting a financial education workshop, Borrowing Basics, Aug. 5 at Home Loan Investment Bank, Warwick. The workshop will run from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Hoxsie branch. By the end of this course, participants will understand how to use a checking account responsibly. Summer Night Concert Series

The Apponaug Area Improvement Association presents its 4th Annual Music for a Summer Night Concert Series on the front steps of Warwick City Hall 6:30-8 p.m. The schedule is as follows: August 7 Bobby Justin Classic Rock ’n Roll; Aug. 21 Ten Rod Ramblers Blues & Rock. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Friendship Hall of Warwick Central Baptist Church Hall across from City Hall.

Blood Drive

William Shields Post 43 is having a blood drive Aug. 10 from 8 a.m.-12 noon. A free breakfast will be served to all who donate. The Post home is located at 662 West Shore Road in Conimicut. Give the gift of life.

Islands Variety Show

Trudeau Memorial Center will present its first Islands Variety Show Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Larkin Recreational Building. Please arrive at 10:30 for great pre-show events.

Conimicut Craft Fair

The annual Conimicut Craft Fair will be held Aug. 16 from noon until 5 p.m. at Conimicut Point Park, 1 Point Avenue, Warwick.  Fair features live music, food and craft vendors and entertainment for children. The park also has beach access and a playground. Free admission to the park and the event.

Weekend of Celebration for Gortonites

Former students and friends of Gorton High School are invited to visit the school and stroll the corridors once again. The school will be opened Aug. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Osteoarthritis Program

Are the aches and pains of osteoarthritis getting in the way of living life to the fullest? Put Pain in Its Place is a free, one-hour class that gives you the tools to manage your osteoarthritis (OA) pain and live better. Developed by the experts you trust at the Arthritis Foundation in conjunction with the National Council on Aging and sponsored by Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Inc., this program will help you understand OA, its causes and how to treat it; learn self-management strategies to prevent and relieve pain; get inspired to take action and get your pain under control; and find out about effective and safe exercises from the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. Cruise Nights

Every Tuesday until September, the Greater Warwick Lions will be holding Cruising with the Oldies at Oakland Beach in Warwick from 4 p.m. to dusk. Sweet antique cars, DJ Dom playing the oldies, food vendors, raffles and prizes all with an ocean view. All proceeds benefit the Lions’ charities, Ronald McDonald House, children with cancer, Insight, children and adults in the community in need of glasses, scholarships awarded to Warwick students and JONAH. Cruise Night is weather permitting; check the Warwick Lions Cruise Night website for cancellations.

Crafters Needed

Crafters needed for the annual Heritage Day event at the Paine House Museum located at 7 Station St., Coventry, on September 27. The price per table is $25. Tables are not available, so you will have to supply your own. There is limited space this year, so if you’re interested contact Sandy at 821-2444.

St. Benedict’s Church

100th Anniversary Gala

On Sept. 27 St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Avenue, will be having their 100th anniversary gala. It will begin with 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by a spectacular celebration in the newly refurbished and handicapped accessible Parish Center. The church is looking for former priests, deacons, principals, nuns, teachers, students, choir members and former and present parishioners. They would like your pictures and past history to make this a memorable and uplifting event not only for the parish but also the faith community. Photographic Society of RI

Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings.
