Osteoarthritis Program

Gaspee Seniors

Ocean State Toastmasters to Meet

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Sept. 2 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island. Pet Refuge Yard Sale

The Pet Refuge a non-profit no-kill animal shelter located on 500 Stony Lane, North Kingstown, is holding a huge yard sale (the biggest ever) Sept. 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Pet Refuge. Large selection of household items, small furniture, designer clothes, costume jewelry, lots of books, DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes. Something for everyone at great prices. Bingo

Bingo will be held Sept. 6 at St. Kevin’s Church hall, 333 Sandy Lane, starting with a $75 special, with the last special $100. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6.

Photo Contest

The Photo Contest at the Botanical Center in Roger Williams Park continues with a talk at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 6 by Dennis Goulet of the Photographic Society of Rhode Island. The 60-minute presentation explores the art of photographing flowers and plants. Tailored for photographers shooting at the Botanical Center, it will feature different ways to take advantage of the unique opportunities available at the center. You may still register for the contest, which includes a $500 best-in-show gift certificate from Hunt’s Photo & Video among the awards. Get more information at www.bccrwp.org/events-and-news. University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners will offer tours of the Botanical Center, provide free analysis of soil samples from visitors’ gardens and answer questions. To obtain a soil sample, use a clean trowel and fill a zip-closed bag with about one cup soil that has been dried overnight. Limit is two bags per person. The Botanical Center opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Vision of Hope Cancer Walk

The 6th annual three-mile fundraising walk to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families will be held, rain or shine, Sept. 7 at Warwick City Park on Asylum Road. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds go to the Women in Need and the Integrative Care Service programs at Women & Infants’ Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean, who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009. Complimentary Reiki, reflexology, massage, chiropractic and astrology services will be offered. Refreshments will be provided. Women Bowlers Wanted

Women’s Bowling League is looking for at least four more women bowlers. They range in age from 30-80 years old. Annual Fall Steak Fry

The annual Fall Steak Fry will be held at Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, 1418 Plainfield St., Cranston, Sept. 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to benefit the Building Roof Fund. Charcoal grilled steaks, salad, baked potato, mushrooms and onions, vegetable, bread & butter, draft beer, soda and coffee. $20 per person. Tickets must be purchased by Sept. 3.

Norwood General Meeting

Last year, one of the members of the Norwood Neighborhood Association observed a break-in in progress. He called the police, and the person was arrested. The homeowners were spared the grief of a break-in. To continue this level of vigilance, the Norwood Neighborhood Association will host a crime watch meeting Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St., presented by the community police. Learn how to become a crime preventer and not a victim. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Tour de Trudeau Bike Run

Trudeau Center’s home-based Children’s Services Department is holding the second annual Tour de Trudeau Bike Run on Sept. 14 at 8 a.m. at City Park in Warwick. There is a 22-, 10- or 3-mile course. Prizes awarded and vendor demonstrations. Join for a fun-filled morning for a good cause. Swinging Squares Workshops

Crafters Needed

Crafters needed for the annual Heritage Day event at the Paine House Museum located at 7 Station St., Coventry, on September 27. The price per table is $25. St. Benedict’s Church

100th Anniversary Gala

On Sept. 27 St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Avenue, will be having their 100th anniversary gala. It will begin with 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by a spectacular celebration in the newly refurbished and handicapped accessible Parish Center. The church is looking for former priests, deacons, principals, nuns, teachers, students, choir members and former and present parishioners. They would like your pictures and past history to make this a memorable and uplifting event not only for the parish but also the faith community. Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Evening Counseling Available

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
