Tri-City Elks

Country line dancing every Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $6 per person. Come and join the fun. Proceeds to benefit Elks charities.

Greenwich Bay Women’s Club

Usher in a happy new year by joining the Greenwich Bay Women’s Club at one of their meetings this year. They meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Atria Harborhill, 159 Division St. on the Warwick/East Greenwich line) to work together to make a difference in local communities. Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Jan. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Ocean State Toastmasters holds its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of some 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. Quahogs and Carousels

The Warwick Historical Society will present a slideshow featuring the glory days of Rocky Point and Oakland Beach Amusement parks at the Warwick Public Library on Jan. 20 at 7 pm. The presentation is accompanied by a narrative that includes music and sound effects. Admission is free and all are welcome. There will be reprints of postcards available for sale.

Pilgrim Senior Center Events

Every Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:45 a.m. come the Pilgrim Senior Center and be a part of the Pilgrim Singing Group with Tony Pisano at the piano. Enjoy listening to music, get up and enjoy some dancing or even grab the mic to sing some tunes for the crowd. Also, join in for a great game of Wheel of Fortune at the Pilgrim Senior Center. This is sure to be an hour of fun and laughter. Bring some friends Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. Presented by Home Instead Senior Care. Space is limited so sign up at the Welcome Desk.

Latin-American Arts Exhibit

The public is invited to meet 10 Latin-American artists who live in RI and learn how they created the 35-plus works showcased in the main gallery at a free opening reception with light refreshments Jan. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road. This is an opportunity for anyone interested in art to learn about the regional art scene and see if there’s a common vision among artists with shared cultural heritage. The exhibit is co-sponsored by RISCA and WMOA; a suggested donation of $3 to $5 will be gratefully accepted in the gallery donation box. Book Sale Fundraiser

Norwood Elementary School 6th graders will be holding a used book sale fundraiser Jan. 23 from 3:05-7 p.m. at Norwood School, 266 Norwood Ave., Warwick.

Voices of RI

The Voices of RI chapter of the Colon Cancer Alliance will hold their next monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Jan 24 in the small meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane, Warwick.  All are welcome to come learn more about the organization, share their stories and meet other survivors and caregivers. Acrylic Painting

Join the Warwick Museum of Art for January Saturday Art Workshops Jan. 24. Saturday Art Workshops take place on the fourth Saturday of each month and this month features acrylic painting. Workshops will run from 10 a.m.-12 noon for ages 6-9 and from 12-2 p.m. for ages 9-12. The cost is $20 for the two-hour workshop. Register by Jan. 23 over the phone at 737-0010. Warwick Municipal Retirees Association

A wonderful time was had by all at the Christmas Luncheon. The room was filled to capacity with good friends, good food, laughter and joy. Their next meeting in December is cancelled, but they’ll see you Jan. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pilgrim Senior Center. Mayor Avedisian will be our guest speaker. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Pizza & Prosthetics

New England Amputee Association is kicking off the 11th year of service to the amputee community. The first meeting of the year is a Pizza and Prosthetics show and tell Jan. 28 from 4:15-6 p.m. at Kent Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, 1351 South County Trail, East Greenwich. The meeting will be held in Building 2, Suite 200. They provide the pizza and you bring your old and new prosthetics to the meeting. This will be a fun time to learn what type of prosthetics people are using and have used in the past. Those folks that cannot use a prosthetic could also find this sharing of resources very informative. Meetings are free and open to all amputees, their families and healthcare professionals. 3 Card Mel

William Shields #43, 662 West Shore Road, will have 3 Card Mel (a variation of the winter meat raffle) every Friday night at 7 p.m. There will be no raffle on Jan. 23, raffle resumes on Jan. 30. Everyone is welcome.

Soccer Club Fundraiser

The Warwick Fire Fighters Soccer Club is raising money to help build a concession stand and make improvements to new fields off Lake Shore Dr. in Warwick. WFFSC was formed in 1984 and is a non-profit, all-volunteer town club that provides an opportunity for all children to participate in organized soccer and promotes the values of good sportsmanship and fair play. The event will take place Jan. 29 from 5-8 p.m. at Moe’s Southwest Grill, 300 Quaker Lane, Warwick.

Elder Care Forum

Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and older to join the Warwick Senior Softball League. It is a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played at Buttonwoods City Park in Warwick on Wednesday mornings. The fee is $20. Art Supplies Needed to Help People with Mental Illness

The Kent Center would greatly appreciate donations of used or new art supplies to stock art classes for youths, teens and adults who struggle with mental illness. Creating art reduces stress, anxiety, fears and depression in people with mental illness and raises a person’s quality of life. The Center, which helps 4,000 Rhode Islanders with mental illness each year, is in constant need of art supply donations such as crayons, markers, watercolors, acrylic paint, construction paper, pipe cleaners, fabric, buttons, coloring books, etc. Contact Sarah Channing at 738-1338 x335 for more information, or drop off tax-deductible donations at 2756 Post Road, Warwick.

Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Fife & Drum Corps

Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders Program hours are 4:40-8 p.m., making it accessible for people who work. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700. 

Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
