Tri-City Elks

Call For Entries

The anti-bullying organization CABINS has issued a call for digital entries from students in Rhode Island middle and high schools, supporting the theme “Random Acts of Kindness.” Winning entries will be awarded cash prizes and invitations to the group’s annual gala on March 29 at Kirkbrae Country Club, Lincoln. Entries should be sent to CABINS electronically by Feb. 6 at entry@CABINSRI.org. Students should include their names, schools and contact information along with their entries. Middle school entries should include a photograph with a quote or caption regarding acts of kindness, using Instagram, done in “meme” style. High school entries should include a 15-second video, using Instagram, supporting the contest’s theme. Videos can include a poem, song or the depiction of a random act of kindness. All entries must include original content. Plagiarism is grounds for disqualification. Entries must be accompanied by a signed release from all persons depicted in photographs or videos, allowing CABINS to use those images on its website and social media and to be displayed at future events including the annual spring gala. Students are encouraged to use the hashtag, #CABINSRI, when posting their entries through social media to help spread the theme of kindness. For inspiration for their entries, students are encouraged to visit www.CABINSRI.org, choose the “Programs” drop-down menu, and use the “Random Acts of Kindness” link. CABINS will hold its annual spring gala March 29 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at Kirkbrae Country Club. The event features food, dancing and a silent auction for gift certificates, gift baskets, sports memorabilia and other items. Steak Fry

Saints Rose and Clement Parish will be hosting a steak fry Feb. 7 in the church hall, 111 Long St. Cocktails will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be steak or chicken, baked potatoes, salad, string beans and bread, with ice cream sundaes for dessert. Bingo

Bingo will be held Feb. 7 at St. Kevin’s Hall, 333 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6 with a $100 special. The last special will be $100.

Warwick Women’s Club

The GFWC Warwick Women’s Club holds monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be February 10 at the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, 821 West Shore Road in Warwick. The doors will be open at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy refreshments and the meeting will begin at 7 p.m.. The WWC is open to all women interested in becoming involved in community betterment. Taize Prayer Service

Spaghetti Supper

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave., is having an all you can eat spaghetti supper Feb. 14 from 4:30-7 p.m. Menu includes salad, spaghetti and meatballs, sausage, rolls, beverages and homemade desserts. Cost for adults is $9, children 6-12 is $4. Children 5 and under are free.

Hi-Lo-Jack Tournament

The Youth Department of the Rhode Island State Grange will be holding a High-Low Jack tournament Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. at Kickemuit Grange Hall, 92 Vernon St., Warren, prior to the meeting of Newport County Pomona. All Grange members and non-members are eligible to compete in this tournament. Teams must consist of two players (at least one member of the team must be a Grange member). All teams must be present by 1 p.m. for the start of the contest. February Art Camp

A new schedule of art sessions for February vacation was announced by Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road. Returning favorites include drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics and more. The camp runs Feb. 16-20 with morning and afternoon sessions for kids ages 6-12. Cost per three-hour session is $35 and there is a discount if you sign up for the whole week. Concert

A concert will be held Feb. 22 at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center from 3-5 p.m. featuring The Becky Chace Band. Listen and dance to folk, rock and blues.

Apponaug Girls 16U

Apponaug Girls 16U-Black Travel team will be holding a comedy fundraiser with Funny 4 Funds March 13at the Warwick Knights of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Tickets are $20. Raffle prizes and 50/50 raffle. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show starts at 8:30 p.m. Cash bar available.  Proceeds help the team travel this summer to various softball tournaments. Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and older to join the Warwick Senior Softball League. It is a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played at Buttonwoods City Park in Warwick on Wednesday mornings. The fee is $20. Bingo Caller Needed

The Pilgrim Senior Center is looking for a volunteer bingo caller on Mondays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. Contact Holly Weber at 468-4074 if you are interested. Art Classes for Teens

Kick start 2015 by adding colorful creativity to your life with art classes for teens on Tuesday nights from 6-8 p.m. at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road. Classes run for three-week intervals and there is a new medium every month like portraits in pencil, mixed media, ceramics, printmaking and more. Class sizes are small, so a lot of one-on-one instruction is guaranteed. Want to learn something new or play a game you’ve been playing for years? Come by the Pilgrim Senior Center every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a game of chess. Their chess group is looking for new people to join their group, and they are willing to teach new players how to play as well.

Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
