CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

(Sequel with a twist)

No doubt avid fans of this Marvel Comics series will score this higher. While Joyce avoids the comic book sagas, I’m always willing to give them a shot.

“Captain America: Civil War” is the 13th in the series, so I wondered how they could add anything to the endless battles between good and evil.

This one starts with the question I’ve always asked myself while walking out of the last 12 movies in the series: How can these super heroes justify the collateral damage of thousands of innocent people being killed and billions of dollars in property damage as they go to extreme means to destroy the enemy?

Well, the writers finally deal with that question right from the beginning, when the United Nations approves an accord that makes the Avengers subject to their rules and regulations. All but Captain America agree, setting the scene for a split in the ranks.

The problem is that the two and a half hour-movie is padded with overlong one-on-one battles among the Avengers, where the audience is subjected to the constant clashing of metal on metal, knowing full well that none of them are going to die.

Chris Evans is Captain America, who spends his time defending the brainwashed Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), while the real villain, a man named Helmut Zemo, plots a long and convoluted plot against them.

Robert Downey Jr. is back as the cynical Iron Man, along with Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, with a host of other returnees, and a comic relief appearance from a young and naive Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

It all comes down to the Big Battle, pitting half of the super heroes against the other half, played out on an airstrip so that entire cities won’t be destroyed.

But don’t worry, the scene is set at the end for the next movie. And if you stick around after the credits, you’ll get some further information.

Rated PG-13, with lots of violence.
