The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team welcomed the Tigers of Roxbury Community College to CCRI’s Flanagan Campus in Lincoln on Sunday. The Knights were able to come out on top with a 3-2 victory over Roxbury. The win gives the Knights a 4-8-1 record overall on the year and the Knights remain at 1-4 in Region XXI play.

The Knights came out firing in the first half. Due to multiple injuries to starters, Head Coach Gabe Toro deployed a new starting lineup on Sunday. The lineup brought a great sense of urgency and it was dangerous going forward.

The Knights scored first through Ibraheem Aborishade

(Lagos, Nigeria), who was able to latch on to a cross by Cameron DiMaria (Coventry, R.I.) and slot the ball into the bottom corner.

The Knights continued to pressure Roxbury throughout the first half. Ben Boahin

(Portsmouth, R.I.) was able to score twice before the first half was over. The first goal came off of a free kick for the Knights that Tho Mith Chin

(Battambang, Cambodia) sent into the box. After the ball bounced around, Boahin was able to find some space and put the ball into the net. On his second goal, central midfielder James Puello

(Cumberland, R.I.) was able to play a great pass through to Boahin, which put him one-on-one with the goalie and he was able to score.

The Knights continued to fight through the second half.

Roxbury was able to create a few chances, scoring off of a corner kick and with a penalty kick.

Roxbury put in a good fight, but the Knights were able to hold on to the lead they created in the first half.

Both Kenny Andrade-Gomes

(Spain) and Danny Junior

(Pawtucket, R.I.) had great games defensively for the Knights.  Christian Ellerbe

(North Kingstown, R.I.) and Jordan Lopez

(Pawtucket, R.I.) each played one half in goal for the Knights, both coming up with some great saves. Ellerbe also played some defense towards the end of the game, putting in a good shift for his team in an unfamiliar position.

Toro thought the team played hard and deserved the win it earned on Sunday.

The Knights will look to keep their winning ways going as they take on Region XXI rival Massasoit Community College at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. A victory will push the Knights into the postseason.
