Knights dominate Roxbury to extend winning streak

The CCRI men’s basketball team hosted Roxbury Community College on Saturday afternoon, controlling the game from start to finish and coming out with their fifth straight victory, 105-65. The win brings the Knights to 14-8 on the season and 7-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights came out of the gate firing. They jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after three baskets by Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, Rhode Island), Grant Gillis (Jamestown, Rhode Island) and Edvaldo Ferreira (Praia, Cape Verde). Roxbury was quickly able to cut the lead to five, but the Knights did not let the visitors get any closer. The Knights opened up the lead to 20 at 35-15. They continued to keep the lead, and went into the half up by 18 points.

The Knights continued to play great defense and score on the offensive end in the second half, as well. The large lead gave Head Coach Rick Harris an opportunity to rest some of his starters and give other players an extended role in the game.  This was not before Ferreira scored two of his 17 points on a vicious windmill jam. The slam dunk put the Knights up by 31.

The Knights never looked back and controlled the tempo the rest of the way, ultimately resulting in a 40-point victory.

Saturday marked the fourth time over the five-game winning streak that CCRI netted 100 points or more.

The Knights were led by three of their Captains – Adrian La Fleur (Sydney, Australia), Ferreira and Vasquez. La Fleur and Ferreira each had 17 points on the night. La Fleur also had seven assists, four rebounds and one steal. Ferreira had a huge night with nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Vazquez had a strong showing with 14 points, including four 3-pointers and four assists.

Harris was pleased with the win over Roxbury. He acknowledged that Roxbury was shorthanded, but commended the Knights’ discipline and focus throughout the game. He continued on by saying “I’m excited each day as I watch this group evolve into the team I envisioned back in the preseason. The best is yet to come.”

The Knights have a week off before they travel to Orange County in Middletown, New York, to take on the Colts on Saturday, Feb. 4. They will look to extend the winning streak to six.
