Lady Knights grab first win of season, 2-1

The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team continued play in Baltimore on Sunday by facing the Knights of CCBC-Essex on Sunday. CCRI would come away with a 2-1 victory to even its record to 1-1 on the young season.

After dropping a game to Lewis &Clark on Saturday, CCRI looked like a different and determined team on Sunday, as it dominated play from the outset. In the 10th minute of play, freshman midfielder Kendra Tantimonico (Warwick, R.I.) dribbled the ball into the corner, beating the Essex defender and crossing the ball in front of the goal where freshman Laura Lopes (Warren, R.I.) tapped it in for a quick 1-0 lead. From that point on, the Lady Knights would continue to dominate the match. In the 30th minute of the second half, CCRI was awarded a corner kick. Freshman forward Melissa Zeman (Coventry, R.I.) served the ball and sophomore Faithe Fernandez (North Providence, R.I.) got a head on the ball to give CCRI the 2-0 lead with just 15 minutes left to play.

However, Essex was not done, as it pressed and was able to cut the lead in half, 2-1, on a breakaway goal from sophomore Alyson Greenstein with just 10 minutes remaining. Essex continued to pressure CCRI, but its defense held up and was able to give the Lady Knights the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashely Van Bemmelen (North Providence, R.I.) helped preserve the win by making some key difficult saves down the stretch.

Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the victory “Coach (Kathy) Bannan and I are very proud of our team for bouncing back today and giving us a split this weekend to open the season. Our players, mostly freshmen, never gave up this weekend playing in excess heat and humidity. The weekend was a learning experience for all of us.”

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday, Sept. 3, when they host the Skylanders of Sussex County Community College from Newton, New Jersey, at 12 p.m. at CCRI in Lincoln.
