Candidates line up for city ballot

Posted

Although the city’s Board of Canvassers has until this Thursday to verify the signatures of registered voters in order to qualify candidates for the ballot, the job was virtually completed as of yesterday. And with the exception of two individuals who did not return signature papers after declaring, all qualified to have their names on the ballot.

The office staff was still verifying the signatures on the forms submitted by Carel Callahan Bainum, who appeared at the City Hall office 10 minutes before the 4 p.m. filing deadline with 25 sheets of signatures – more than 800. Candidates for mayor must submit the signatures of 200 Warwick registered voters and the staff believes Bainum would have no trouble meeting the requirement.

A Democrat, Bainum will face a primary with John “Jack” Kirby. Also qualifying are the two Republicans running for the city’s top elective post – incumbent Scott Avedisian and political newcomer Stacia Petri. Kevin Eisemann is running as an independent.

Choosing not to file signatures were Donald Fife, who had declared as a Democrat in Ward 1, and Michael Izzo, who declared as a Republican in Ward 3.

Fife’s withdrawal means former School Committee member Patrick Maloney will be the Democratic nominee in his bid to unseat incumbent Steven Colantono who, at this point, is the only Republican on the nine-member City Council.

In Ward 3, incumbent Camille Vella-Wilkinson will face the winner of a Republican primary between John Falkowski and Henry T. Williams Jr., and the independent Harold Ouimette.

Incumbent councilmen Thomas Chadronet (D-Ward 2) and Charles Donovan Jr. (D-Ward 7) also face primary contests.

Michael Zarum is running in Ward 2 and Kathleen Usler in Ward 7.

The only other contest for council is in Ward 8, where Republican Luelyn Jennings is challenging incumbent Democrat Joseph Gallucci. Incumbent council members Joseph Solomon (D-Ward 4); Edgar Ladouceur (D-Ward 5); Donna Travis (D-Ward 6) and Steve Merolla (D-Ward 9) are unchallenged.
