’Canes defeat Mariners in extra innings, win fourth straight

Posted

The Warwick Vets softball team is rolling into the playoffs.

The ’Canes concluded their league slate with a fourth consecutive victory in dramatic fashion over Narragansett on Wednesday afternoon.

It took 12 innings to decide the game, but after surrendering the lead and coming back in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings, Vets finally put an end to things in the 12th on an RBI single by Kayla Morin to propel the home team to an 11-10 win.

Vets quickly took a lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Michelle Spremulli. Natasha Savage then came home on a throw down to second with runners on the corners to give Vets a 2-0 advantage.

But then the Mariners plated the next seven runs to take a 7-2 lead, putting the ’Canes’ three-game winning streak in jeopardy.

The score remained there until the bottom of the sixth, when Alexis LeBelle laced an RBI triple. A sacrifice fly then brought the freshman home to make it 7-4 heading into the final frame.

Morin kept Narragansett off the board in the top of the seventh, setting up a Vets rally in the bottom half of the inning.

Megan Ursini and Emily Walason started the rally with singles.

Ursini then scored on an error by the third baseman and Walason touched home on a groundout, cutting the deficit to 7-6.

Savage brought home the game-tying run on an infield single that was perfectly placed, sending the game into extra innings.

Narragansett took the lead in the eighth, but after LeBelle found her way on, she stole third and went home on an errant throw.

Vets faced one-run deficits in each of the next two innings too, but RBI singles from Walason and Spremulli kept the game going.

Morin settled down after that, putting up zeroes in the 11th and 12th innings.

She then helped her own cause in a big way at the dish, ripping an RBI single to complete the ’Canes’ comeback win.

Morin picked up the win in the circle, tossing all 12 innings for Vets.

The win pushed Vets’ regular season record to 9-7, earning it a No. 6 seed for the Division II playoffs.

The ’Canes are set to take on No. 3 St. Ray’s today at Hank Soares Field at 4 p.m.

The Saints went 14-2 during the regular season.

Three ’Canes earn All-Division honors

Vets has had plenty to be proud of with its play as of late.

But this past week, four individuals were recognized for personal accomplishments over the course of the season.

Savage highlighted a group of four players that were honored by the league.

Savage was named First Team All-Division after the sophomore second baseman had an outstanding year both offensively and defensively.

Spremulli, a junior first baseman, earned Second Team All-Division, while sophomore pitcher Morin was named to the Third Team.

Shortstop and senior captain Liz Iadevaia earned an honorable mention for her play in her final season at Vets, as well.
