’Canes edge ’Bolts, pick up first victory

The Warwick Vets Hurricanes got their first win of the season when they beat the Cranston East Thunderbolts, 6-5, at Cranston Stadium on Tuesday night.

For Warwick, Eric Procaccini had two goals, Tyler Scotti had two goals and an assist and Kiernan Habershaw contributed two assists. Gisella Rodriguez led the way for East with two goals and an assist.

Warwick head coach Alex Gregson was thrilled with his team’s victory.

“Our boys definitely played way better than they have been playing,” Gregson said. “We controlled the ball a lot on offense, which is something we have not been doing in the past. So, it’s good to see that they’re finally getting their heads on straight and hopefully we’re turning it around.”

Vets struck first with 6:28 to play in the first quarter when Anthony Paone scored from in front.

East then went on the attack. First, Carlos Montt shot wide and then Jovanny Cianci had a shot stopped by Warwick freshman goaltender Jake Pelliccio. With 3:07 left in the first, Habershaw dished to Tim Chaffee for a goal, putting Warwick up 2-0. Warwick continued to attack, but Dany Gomez stopped a shot from Habershaw before making a stick save on an attempt from Scotti.

East pulled it to 2-1 with 49 seconds left in the quarter when Gisella Rodriguez found Henry Torres in front for a goal. Gomez made a stop on a shot from Mike Isles before the buzzer sounded to keep the ’Bolts’ within one.

East won the second quarter’s opening faceoff, and 11 seconds later, Cianci found the back of the net to tie the game at 2.

However, with 10:07 remaining in the second, Vets went back on top when Scotti scored to make it 3-2.

Soon after, East’s Jamison Cannata went on a fast break, but was denied by Pelliccio. Midway through the quarter, Vets had another chance when Scotti passed to Procaccini, but Gomez was able to snag it with the netting of his stick to prevent a goal.

However, with 44 seconds remaining in the half, Chaffee passed to Procaccini in front for a goal to give Warwick a 4-2 edge going into the break.

Just 26 seconds into the third quarter, Cannata scored for East, cutting the Warwick lead to 4-3. It didn’t stop there. Just 35 seconds later, Montt tied it up at 4.

Vets had some opportunities, but the East defense prevented Isles from getting off a clean shot in front and then Gomez made a stop on a shot from Scotti.

Then, Warwick’s Pelliccio came up with a kick save on a shot from Rodriguez. The teams were locked at 4 heading into the fourth frame.

Warwick would win the fourth quarter faceoff, and 18 seconds later, Scotti would score his second goal of the game, putting Warwick up 5-4.

With 7:32 left, Warwick’s Procaccini dished to Isles, but his shot was stopped by Gomez. Then, Gomez made another save on a shot from Procaccini.

With 5:11 to play, Rodriguez came up big, scoring to tie the game at 5.

With under three minutes to play, Warwick’s Chaffee passed to Scotti, but Gomez came up with a stop. Next, Warwick had shots from Jared Davenport go wide twice. However, with 1:02 remaining in the game, Scotti found Procaccini in front for what would be the game-winner. Then, in the final seconds, Pelliccio came up with a stop to preserve the 6-5 win for Warwick.

Gregson is very pleased with what he has seen out of Pelliccio.

“I have no complaints, the kid’s playing his butt off,” Gregson said. “It’s definitely the hardest position on the field…it’s brutal out there and it’s easy to get discouraged, and as a freshman, he’s taking it very well and he’s really stepped up in his role.”

East assistant coach Matt Davis was happy with his team’s effort despite the loss.

“We just missed out on some key offensive plays and our penalties hurt us,” Davis said. “The next time we play them, I think we’re gonna take it.”

According to the East coach, the ’Bolts were missing one of their shooters.

“I commend all the players out there,” Davis said. “They gave 100 percent the whole time. They never gave up. So, they walked out of here with their heads up. They left it all on the field.”

Warwick improves to 1-2 while East falls to 0-4.
