He may be listed as a defender, but Hendricken alum Paul Phillips was very much involved in the attack for Castleton on Saturday as the Spartans pitched a 4-0 shutout against Maine-Farmington.
The former Hawk chalked up a goal and an assist as his squad picked up its third win in a row, on the heels of previous triumphs over in-state opponents Lyndon State and Green Mountain.
Phillips notched his second marker of the season in the contest’s 27th minute, finishing off an intricate corner kick routine that he initiated with a shot tucked inside the far post to put Castleton 2-0 up.
As the match reached its second 45, Phillips turned provider, crossing the ball into the penalty area for Dallas Desroches to flick into the back of the net for his second of the campaign.
The following day, the Spartans returned to the pitch versus Thomas in the hopes that their good form would carry over to an upset victory over the Terriers, who entered the contest with a perfect 5-0 mark in North Atlantic Conference play.
Ninety minutes later, an Adam LaBrie brace was the difference between the teams as Thomas kept its unblemished conference record with a 2-0 upending of Castleton.
Phillips and the rest of his Castleton teammates will have to wait until October 18 for their next North Atlantic match, an away trip to a Johnson State team that has dropped its last four by a combined score of 36-1.
Prior to taking on the Badgers, the Spartans will have a pair of non-league contests to occupy their attention, first hosting Middlebury on Wednesday before hitting the road for a Sunday clash with SUNY-Canton.
D’Ambruoso helps Corsairs snap skid
Former Pilgrim standout Talia D’Ambruoso played a key role last week as the UMass-Dartmouth women’s soccer team snapped a seven-match winless run with a pair of 3-0 victories.
The Corsairs returned to the win column on Wednesday evening by upending Eastern Nazarene in a non-conference match.
D’Ambruoso’s contribution came in the game’s 58th minute, firing a free kick towards the path of Lion goalkeeper Anastasia Swift that was knocked home by Lucy Jensen after Swift surrendered a rebound.
The ex-Patriot was credited with an assist on the sequence of events that finished the night’s scoring, her first of the season.
UMass-Dartmouth then took on UMass-Boston on Saturday, while also looking to end a decade-long winless drought against the Beacons.
The hex dating back to 2006 was broken thanks to a pair of goals from Abby Silva, who opened the scoring just a minute into the match before doubling the Corsair lead in the 64th.
D’Ambruoso added one more for insurance purposes just a minute after Silva’s second of the day, thundering home a free kick that opposition goalkeeper Jessie Tenaglia was unable to respond to.
