Students from Timothy Hayes’ urban sociology class at Toll Gate High School met recently with Mayor Scott Avedisian to discuss their community service project. They are working with the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries cleaning, documenting and improving several cemeteries throughout Warwick. When they met with the mayor they had already cleaned cemetery #71, the Briggs-Stone Lot on Sparrow Lane, where they discovered three buried headstones. They also discovered three additional buried headstones at cemetery #56, the Old Baptist Church Burial Yard on the corner of West Shore Road and Church Avenue. Anyone wishing to perform community service in one of Warwick’s 120 historical cemeteries should contact Susan Cabeceiras of the Warwick Planning Department at 738-2000 ext. 6286.
