Concerned by possible increase in traffic

To the Editor:

Several months ago, residents of the neighborhood of Chapmans Avenue (Rte. 5 end), heard that the Shell/Dunkin Donuts store at the intersection of Route 5 and Route 113 was to be demolished and a new and larger store was planned and included a drive-thru for the Dunkin. The neighbors in the immediate area of the store (approximately 10 families) met as a group to discuss concerns with this plan.

It was the general agreement that the #1 problem we have with this expansion is the amount of traffic that is generated on our street from folks using the entrance and exit onto Chapmans Ave., and the fears that this will increase substantially when the larger store and drive-thru is built. I spoke with council candidate CJ Donovan several weeks ago during his walk through the area and described the issue to him. He met the next night with all the neighbors in front of my house and offered his assistance. He then met with members of the city planning board and described our concerns, and our request that the new store eliminate the Chapmans Ave. enter/exit from the future store, thereby requiring people to use the two main streets instead of a neighborhood street to get into and out of the business.

On Thursday, August 25, he again met with all the neighbors to tell us that the store had indeed applied for a demolition permit to take down the building and that they had purchased land from the state to move the new building closer to Route 5, so as to accommodate the drive-thru. While there are folks that are opposed to the drive-thru, the main request of the majority is that the entrance on Chapmans Ave. be eliminated when the new store is built, the traffic and trash we see daily would triple on our street is the concern. CJ Donovan has been a great help through the red tape and has pledged his continued assistance to us on this matter.
