Yesterday’s temperatures in the 90s didn’t beat the 98-degree record recorded for the day in 1999. Conditions were more comfortable at Oakland Beach as Paulina Mathias and her daughter Sanbalis from Central Falls discovered. As for Pat Lombardi who worked the New England Frozen Lemonade truck at the beach, the breeze was a relief and her only regret was, “I don’t have time to work on my tan.” (Warwick Beacon photos)

Oakland Beach is an undiscovered jewel. We should promote it to attract tourists from Woonsocket to Warwick. Tourists become home buyers who pay taxes, increasing the number of taxpayers reducing the need to raise taxes for the rest of us. We should charge a parking fee that is half the state beaches and reinvest 100% of the money into making this Oakland Beach "jewel" more and more attractive. The money received would pay for the beach clean-up as well as the advertising without costing the taxpayer a dime. This is a win-win for tax payers and the City and I don't think Iggy's, or Top-of-the-Bay will complain either.

Rick, I know one issue in the past is that it cost more to pay the workers to collect the beach fees, than the actual beach fee program was taking in. This had the opposite effect in terms of adding revenue to the beach clean up budget.
I agree with you that a fee makes alot of sense (if it can be done right). I only raise that point so that we charge enough that it can make a meaningful difference, without deterring everyone from using our beaches and without the program losing money .
