Cranston man charged with leaving 3-year-old son alone in hot car

The father of a three-year-old boy left alone in a car during Thursday’s scorching heat has been charged.

Bunroth Chhun, 41, of 185 Budlong Road in Cranston, faces one count of neglect of a child. He was arraigned Friday, with bail set at $5,000 surety. He was additionally ordered to have no contact with his children.

According to a statement from Cranston police, officers responded to the parking lot of the medical building at 1090 New London Ave. shortly before 2:30 p.m. Thursday following a report of an unattended child in the back seat of a red Toyota van. The calling party indicated the vehicle was not running, its windows were closed, and the child was crying.

Fire Department personnel were already on the scene when police arrived, and had been able to unlock the vehicle without force and remove the child. Officers “observed that the child was crying and sweating profusely,” the statement reads.

Police say the boy’s mother responded to the scene and took custody of him. While the boy appeared unharmed, he was later taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

At that point, officers had made contract with Chhun, who had exited the medical building. According to police, interviews with fire personnel and witnesses at the scene revealed the child had been left alone in the van for roughly 30 to 40 minutes, with the windows only partially open and no air conditioning running. During that time, police say, the temperature outside was approximately 93 degrees.

It is believed Chhun took one of his children into the medical building for an appointment and left the three-year-old behind.

Police said the Department of Children, Youth and Families was advised of the incident. The department’s Special Victims Unit was conducting a follow-up investigation.

Big picture of Bunroth Chhun, 41 of 185 Budlong Road . I can understand the local Cranston Herald wanting to shame the shameful. But this guy is not MOST WANTED or a serial killer. The structure of the isolated and increasing stressed nuclear family in capitalist society make these child neglect horror stories increasingly probable-even if always preventable.

A distracted, overwhelmed father - or mother - deserves a measure of pity .Get the FACTS.
