Cranston native stage manages Warwick Theatre
Don Fowler
ROBIN GRADY

Cranston native Robin Grady decided early in life that the theatre was the career path she wanted to take. Her Cranston West home room teacher was also the drama coach and encouraged her to get involved in the school plays.

"I discovered that I enjoyed working in stage management rather than on stage and found myself involved in almost every show as a junior and senior," she said.

Grady went on to get her BFA at URI in 2004 and has been working as a freelance stage manager ever since.

"I like the freedom of freelancing and have been fortunate to find work and make a living in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and in Pennsylvania in the summer," she said.

Robin is currently stage manager for the production of "Fools" at the Ocean State Theatre Company in Warwick and will also work on their next production, "Rent." Her first job after graduation was as production assistant for the "Henry Plays" at Trinity Rep.

"It was trial by fire," she said. "I learned so much and was able to get my equity card, which allowed me to work with quality professional theatres."

After doing more shows at Trinity, she has been busy using her talents at such prominent theatres as the Huntington and Lyric in Boston, the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and theatres in Kentucky and Colorado. She also stage managed "The Elephant Man" and "Much Ado About Nothing" at Gamm Theatre.

What does a stage manager do?

"I coordinate everything that happens among departments," Robin said. "It is really about managing people. It is my job to maintain the director's vision, to always keep in mind what the director intended. Scenes often change from opening night to the last show. The show gets better, but the director's intentions stay the same.

"I had a five-year goal, and I believe that I have been right on track," Robin said.

You can catch the results of her hard work at Warwick's Ocean State Theatre Company.
