Cross country season opens with Injury Fund

More than 1,000 runners converged on Burrillville Middle School for the annual Cross Country Injury Fund event on Saturday. Bishop Hendricken took the first 11 spots in its race to win, while La Salle, Cumberland and East Greenwich won the other boys’ races. La Salle, North Kingstown, Coventry and South Kingstown won the girls’ races. Toll Gate was the top Warwick squad with a second-place finish behind Coventry in the Caswell race.

Hendricken, which has won the last six state championships, cruised to victory in the Hird race with a perfect 15 points. Prout was second with 79 points. Avery Ingegneri was the top finisher for the Hawks in 16 minutes, 36.33 seconds. He was followed by ten of his teammates – Nick Celico, Grant Gauthier, Tom McMahon, Michael Kiernan, Wally Fitzhugh, Tom Grizzetti, Jared Boulanger, Matt Wilks, Jack Rossi and Jake Cardello. Also in the Hird race, Warwick Vets’ Jacob Pikul finished 33rd.

The Toll Gate and Pilgrim boys ran in the Jackson race, with the Titans finishing fourth and the Patriots in seventh. Toll Gate’s Evan Cummiskey led the way with a ninth-place finish. Nick Mattioli was 22nd, Nik Poulios finished 36th, Brad Meunier finished 37th, Ryan Viti was 40th and Dan Underwood took 46th to round out the scoring for the Titans. Pilgrim was led by Joe Tocco, who took 15th. Christopher Cahill finished 41st, Brandon Paiva was 58th, Collin Devine took 59th, James Kozusko finished 69th, James Richardson took 79th and Andrew Picard finished 85th to round out the Pats’ top six.

On the girls’ side, Toll Gate senior Erika Pena was the top performer with a fourth-place finish in the Caswell race, as the Titans ran to second. Teammate Nora Hall was just behind Pena in seventh, Abby Tillotson took 11th, Lian Smithers finished 12th, Jess Cawley was 19th, Christina Abramson took 33rd and Hannah Senerchia finished 34th.

Vets took fifth in the Caswell race, with Tess Bussick’s 25th-place finish setting the pace. Sarah Grace Plante was 28th, Charlotte Rivers took 29th, Ashley Clift was 53rd, Natalie Preciado finished 59th and Vanessa Isherwood took 60th.

Pilgrim competed in the Hindley race and finished fifth. Bryanna Mullin finished 24th and Maranda Duffie took 25th. Alexia Maxwell finished 37th, Mary-Kate Agnew finished 49th, Nicole Gauthier was 57th, Julissa Gonzalez took 60th and Jaycene Chattelle finished 77th.

The event also included freshman races. Hendricken’s Alex Mansour was Warwick’s top runner on the boys’ side in sixth. Toll Gate’s Nikolas Reygadas placed ninth and Hendricken’s Gian Pandolfini took 15th. Toll Gate’s Sophia Maynard and Madison Janysek led Warwick girls with 29th and 30th place finishes.
