Cyclist struck while crossing Warwick Ave. remains hospitalized

Posted

As of press time yesterday, Warwick Police were not identifying the middle-aged white man who was struck while riding a bicycle across Warwick Avenue in the vicinity of 2000 Warwick Avenue July 28 at 9:30 p.m.

Police report that the individual remains in the hospital and is in stable condition.

According to police, the preliminary investigation disclosed that the vehicle was traveling north on Warwick Avenue in the left lane when it hit the cyclist who initially appears to have been crossing the roadway from the westbound side to eastbound side of Warwick Avenue. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and the preliminary investigation shows that speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. As of yesterday, no charges were filed against the driver, who was identified as a 45-year-old Warwick woman. Her name was not released.

The investigation is ongoing and any person with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division or Sgt. Earl Read (468-4293) or Officer Hart (468-4345), who is assigned as the lead investigator.

Gary Remillard, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and is familiar with that stretch of Warwick Avenue, called the Beacon yesterday to point out the road is poorly lit at that location. He urged state representatives to look into the issue and seek to have the state improve lighting before another accident.
