Dean, Sequeira lead Titans past Lions

Toll Gate Titans’ freshman Jack Dean scored the lone goal late as Toll Gate snuck by the Lincoln Lions, 1-0, at Thayer Arena on Friday night.

Toll Gate goaltender Austin Sequeira had 21 saves, while the goalie for Lincoln, Daniel Fraser, had 14.

“Both teams battled,” Toll Gate head coach Michael Champagne said. “I thought Lincoln played a great game. We said coming into it that their record isn’t indicative of how they’ve been playing, and it showed. They carried the play for a lot of the game. They made it really hard for us to get pucks to the net. They stood us up everywhere and luckily we had a good third period against them.”

Sequeira stopped two shots early, one on a backhand from Lincoln’s William Bray and the other on a shot from Noah Duquette.

Toll Gate had a chance when Dean went on a breakaway early only to have the puck knocked away by Lincoln’s Brenden Gannon.

With 1:52 left in the first period, Toll Gate’s Connor Sullivan had a chance, but misfired on net, keeping the game scoreless at the end of one period.

The Titans’ William Fox was stonewalled by Frasier to start the second period. Toll Gate had a number of shots midway through the period, but it would either misfire or get stonewalled by Fraser.

With 4:30 left in the period, Lincoln’s Dylan Anderson fired a slap shot from just in front of the blue line, but it was denied by Sequeira. Next, Toll Gate’s Jake Stachurski passed in front to James Squire, but he couldn’t light the lamp. Sequeira stopped two Lincoln slap shots in the final two minutes of the second period to keep the game knotted at 0.

With 11:50 to play in regulation, Toll Gate’s Bradley Meunier was thrown in the sin bin for a penalty. That is when Lincoln’s Gannon tried to take advantage. He fired two slap shots, but both went wide.

Then, with 7:30 to play, Dean lit the lamp for Toll Gate. Dean’s goal was assisted by teammates Kyle Palumbo and Squire.

Champagne was happy with the way Dean’s whole line played. “That’s a good goal, just working hard, crashing the net and good things happen,” Champagne said. “We played with speed and got to the net and we got the goal out of it.”

With 40 seconds to play, Sequeira came up with a big stop to preserve the victory.

The Titans (6-4-1) will play a pair of home games this weekend – Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against East Greenwich and Sunday at 3 p.m. against South Kingstown. Both games will be played at Thayer Arena.
