Depth leads Hawks past Eagles

Posted

Junior Max Miranda and senior Marc Andrews won two individual events and swam on two winning relays apiece as the undefeated Hendricken swim team glided past Barrington, 60-34, at McDermott Pool on Tuesday afternoon.

Miranda is the best swimmer in the state, bar none, and he wins every event that he steps to the starting block for. But what makes Hendricken so dominant is its tremendous depth – winning eight of 11 events while claiming numerous second and third-place finishes, as well. If the Hawks keep this pace up, they’ll make it nearly impossible for in-state teams to contend in dual meets.

“We took first and third in all the relays, that’s big,” Hendricken coach David Hanson said. “In dual meets, and in big meets we’re even deeper, we go three or four deep in every event. Miranda is the key, but John Beretta swam great today, Marc Andrews swam fantastic, Lucas Stencel. As a team, we’re working harder than we ever thought about working last year.”

That’s bad news for the rest of the state.

And the Hawks made quick work of the Eagles, who were the state runners-up last winter.

Hendricken jumped out in front, 7-3, after the first event, with Stencel, Miranda, Andrews and Connor Levine teaming up to win the 200 medley relay in a time of one minute, 43 seconds.

Barrington showed why its one of the state’s top teams over the next two events, getting wins from Ethan O’Connor in the 200 free and Aidan Lane in the 200 individual medley.

But even with the pair of first-place finishes, Hendricken still led by four, with Andrews slated to swim in the next two events.

He would answer the bell to further the gap on the scoreboard, winning the 50 free in 23.28 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 56.10 seconds.

After the pair of dominating performances from Andrews, the Hawks led 29-13, and Miranda was due up next.

The decorated swimmer would blow away his competition in the 100 free in a time of 48.14 seconds.

Barrington’s Ben Vesey won the 500 free next, before the Hawks went on to claim the last four events.

The 200 free relay team of Andrews, Levine, Brendan Crowe and Miranda swung the momentum back in Hendricken’s favor with a first-place finish.

The Hawks took the final two individual events, too, getting wins from Stencel in the 100 backstroke and Miranda in the 100 breaststroke.

The 400 free relay team of Stencel, Alex Vessella, Dillane Wehbe and Crowe followed by capping the meet with an exclamation point, cruising into first with a time of three minutes, 35.30 seconds.

The meet against Barrington was one that Hendricken circled early in the season, and coming away with a landslide victory validates all the work that the Hawks are putting forth in a quest to repeat as state champions.

“This was a good statement for us,” Hanson said. “You never know, kids are kids. But I didn’t say much, they came out and knew what they wanted to do, and they did it.”

With the win, the Hawks improved to 3-0 in Division I.

They’ll return to action next Thursday when Cumberland makes a visit to McDermott Pool for a 4 p.m. start.
