EG Hall of Fame seeks nominees

The East Greenwich Athletic Hall of Fame Committee (not to be confused with the EGHS Wall of Honor), held their first meeting since their inaugural dinner this past spring in preparation for their next class of inductees in the spring of 2016.

The East Greenwich Athletic Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1962, with the induction of local athletic legend, Anthony “Tar Tar” Ucci. It ran continuously until 1974, went dark, revived in 1986, dark again, then picked up from 1989 until 1997, when it closed it doors.

Now thanks to the efforts of Jeff Santos, Guy Asadorian and Anthony Ucci (nephew), the hall is springing back into action with new blood and new ideas. Last spring they inducted Jack Sinnegen, now a veterinarian, who was an All State player at EGHS and a two-sport athlete at the University of Pennsylvania; Steve Petteruti, an All State wrestler and now a doctor; longtime East Greenwich High School football coach, baseball coach, and athletic director Art Kershaw, and, longtime East Greenwich basketball and tennis coach and A.D. Paul Wragg.

Last year’s event, held at the East Greenwich Armory, drew a crowd of 130 former athletes, coaches, family and friends. This year the committee hopes to move the event to the EG Veteran Firemen’s Hall, the original home of the affair. Committee members are also looking to receive nominations. If you know of anyone who was an outstanding athlete, male or female, at East Greenwich High School, East Greenwich Academy or who played for the Frenchtown Farmers, or any of the East Greenwich Townie teams in football, basketball or baseball, contact a committee member. Consideration will also be given to an East Greenwich resident who starred in a college or professional sport.

Committee members are: Jeff Santos, Guy Asadorian, Anthony Ucci, Bruce Roberts, Chris Hurd, Curt James, Don Bowen, Stu Essex, and Bruce Mastracchio.
