(Clever one-joke

comedy)

Kevin Spacey makes a funny, believable President Richard Nixon, and Michael Shannon has all the right moves for Elvis Presley in this clever, one-joke comedy about what might have happened when two of the most famous people in the world met in the Oval Office.

Much of the hour and a half movie is spent on Elvis and his PR person trying to set up the meeting. It is a lot more fun when the two meet. The foul-mouthed Nixon is reluctant at first, and shocked by Elvis’ lack of protocol, but warms up quickly when he discovers that the two right-wingers have much in common.

Spacey has the Nixon moves down pat (no pun intended). Watch him when Elvis gives him a big hug. Elvis wants nothing more than to have a badge proclaiming him a Federal Agent at-Large, so he can go undercover and win the war on drugs and stop those nasty Commies.

There are some funny moments, like Elvis trying to present the president with a gift that drives the Secret Service crazy.

Colin Hanks is fun to watch as the very nervous aide to the president, who has a poignant moment with Elvis’ PR guy, who wants to get back home to meet his fiancée’s parents. Both are equally married to their jobs and at the mercy of their bosses.

“Elvis & Nixon” is a fun little film that takes a few truths and tests your imagination as to what could have happened in that room.

Rated R because of the foul-mouthed president.
