Edgewood Hawks/Providence Jr. Friars to hold golf tournament fundraiser

If you ever played ice hockey, the famed Edgewood Hockey Association, the once-storied Cranston program, is looking for you.

If you ever played youth hockey at all, the EHA – which now has a well-organized affiliate known as the Providence Junior Friars Hockey Club – needs your help.

If you like fun, food and more importantly giving back, the ageless and highly-respected youth hockey group has a near incomparable ticket.

On Saturday, July 25, Edgewood Rhode Island Hawks and Providence Junior Friars Hockey Clubs will hold their second annual open golf tournament that some people are saying may rival the best benefit event of its kind in New England.

“A lot of people have put a lot of time into this year’s golf tournament,” offered Jim Forcier, who enjoyed success at many different levels of hockey and works tirelessly to make the Hawks and Junior Friar programs the best they can be. “We’re hoping to have an even larger playing field than last year.”

Forcier, who is a staffer with Bank of America and has worked with Nicole Fontenault, Matt Bourski and Paul Evangelista – as well as other adult volunteers from both youth programs – explained will be played at ever-improved Cranston Country Club. Tee off is set for 1:30 p.m. with registration starting at 12:30.

The playing fee, Forcier announced, has been set at $125 per player and includes practicing on the CCC’s range and putting area, green fees, cart and post-tourney dinner.

However, as Forcier emphasized at yet another tourney meeting last week: “We have solicited many local businesses for donations such as prizes, raffle items, gift certificates and merchandise that will be featured during the always-interesting and fun-filled post-golf dinner raffle.

And to add interest to an already exciting tourney, Vin Martucci – of Martucci’s restaurant fame – has created a special tourney dinner menu that will please just about any palate.

“Vinny always does a great job with the food at CCC,” Forcier noted. “Some of us get hungry when we talk about the buffet dinner he has planned for this year’s tourney.”

The menu?

Forcier said that post-golf meal will include salad, pasta, meatballs, sausage and peppers, chicken Marsala, bread and butter, coffee and ice cream. A cash bar will also be open during the dinner.

As a new tourney twist, organizers said lunch will be provided for all golfers on the course free of charge.

Forcier also announced that people who either can’t play golf because of their respective schedules but would like to help both youth hockey programs are encouraged to take in the dinner. Meal tickets are priced at $30 for non-golfers who can also participate in the raffle.

The committee also announced yet another part of this year’s tourney that will provide valuable financial assistance to the Hawks and Junior Friars.

And that is, for all intents and purposes, tee and putting green sponsors.

“We are very proud of our players,” Nicole Fontenault, who is chairing this year’s golf tourney, began. “They work hard and represent themselves, their families and our organizations both on and off the ice, we thank everyone – in advance – for their generosity and support in the sponsorship of these types of signs.”

Fontenault said tee and putting green signs are available for just $100 per sign, which she said measures 18 x 24 inches and will include the company name, phone number, website address and logo if so desired. All contributions will be greatly appreciated and are, as the chairperson noted, tax deductible.

Anyone who’d like to sign-up for a foursome or playing spot, or to sponsor one of the tee and putting green signs who should call Fontenault at (401) 952-2345, Forcier (401-749-5328), Bourski (401-523-9239) or Evangelists (401-265-0476).
