Edward D. Greer, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 31, 2014.

He was born on February 8, 1926, the son of George E. and Marie (Alarie) Greer. He was a graduate of Aldrich High School in Warwick and Bryant College. Ed served in the Army Air Force as a radioman in World War II.

. He worked as an accountant for the City of Providence Finance Dept. and later transferred to the Providence Health Dept, rising to the level of Registrar of Vital Statistics. Ed retired as Chief of the Division of Food Protection and Sanitation of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Ed was the past president of the Friends of the Warwick Senior Center, was very active as a leader in the Pawtuxet Village Association, a member of the Pawtuxet Rangers Militia, Save the Bay, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Pawtuxet River Authority and Watershed Council and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a talented gardener, a local history buff and a founding member and first president of the Little Rhody Bottle Club. He delighted in building and repairing things, and his genial good humor won him many friendships.

He was the husband of the late Mary Barbara (Hayes) Greer. He was the brother of Jean Schlaufman and the late George, Ruth, Robert, Isabel, William, Russell, and Gerald Greer. Loving father of James E. Greer, MD and his wife, Anna Mary Heffernan, Mary Ann Greer Chase and her husband, Robert, Patricia Sperduti and her husband, Michael, Rosemary Kelley and her husband Thomas, and Joseph Greer and his wife, Sharon. Edward leaves eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was the grandfather of the late Gregory M. Sperduti and Matthew J. Chase.

His funeral will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, Fair Street. Burial with military honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 p.m.
