Edward J. Scowcroft, age 98, of Spencer Woods Drive, Warwick, died on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Kent County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Providence, the son of the late George T. and Helen F. (Lyons) Scowcroft, he lived in Warwick for most of his life, and moved to Hollywood, Florida as a seasonal resident in 1998. Mr. Scowcroft was a United States Army veteran of World War II, assigned to the 118th Medical Battalion, 43rd Infantry Division. He spent three years in the South Pacific, and received the Bronze Star after participating in several major battles, including the Battle of Luzon and the liberation of the Philippines. He was a life member of the 43rd Infantry Division Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Scowcroft was employed as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, for many of those years in the Gaspee Plateau section of Warwick, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the U.S. Postal Union and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. In the 1960’s, he was a Scoutmaster with Troop 2 Lakewood. He was a dog lover.

He is survived by a son, Glen A. Scowcroft of Warwick and Hollywood, Florida; a daughter, Pamela E. Conley of Warwick; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Doris E. McKenzie.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 14, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Visiting hours are on Wednesday 4-7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in North Burial Ground, Providence.
