Elementary schools in Cranston, Warwick, Johnston put on alert after threat sent to local police

Cranston, Johnston and Warwick were on alert Tuesday after a written threat against elementary schools in those communities was sent to Johnston Police.

A posting on the Cranston Public Schools website by Superintendent Dr. Judith Lundsten confirmed that police received an “anonymous, unconfirmed note” that made a threat against the schools.

“We are working with the Cranston Police Department and will be taking extra precautions by having police personnel at all of our schools and insuring all of our safety procedures are being followed closely,” Lundsten’s statement reads. “Our main concern is the ongoing safety of all of our students and staff.”

Warwick Superintendent Dr. Richard D’Agostino said Tuesday afternoon he had spoken with Mayor Scott Avedisian and Police Chief Col. Steven McCartney and that based on the threat, “we’re taking it as serious as everybody else is.”

D’Agostino did not discuss the nature of the threat.
