Embracing Cultures exhibit now through Friday at Warwick Museum

Thunderstorms didn’t deter art lovers from attending the opening reception of Cornerstone Adult Service’s “Embracing Cultures” multimedia exhibit held July 10 at the Warwick Museum of Art.

More than 80 people enjoyed the beautiful, eclectic artwork, which included everything from African rain sticks and American folk art quilts to Japanese fans and Portuguese Roosters.

The exhibit is the culmination of a yearlong collaboration between Cornerstone Adult Day Services and the Warwick Museum of Art.

Participants of Cornerstone Adult Day Centers, under the direction of Simone Spruce-Torres, former WMOA program director, have created an impressive collection of over fifty pieces of artwork, reflecting diverse cultures from around the world. The project has been an educational, creative, and social experience for Cornerstone participants, as they explored the traditions and art of other countries, and then set to work creating art in mediums as varied as yarn, clay and wood. Cornerstone participant, Lyse, expressed an enthusiasm shared by those involved in the collaboration. “I looked forward to the class each week. I’ve never done anything like this in my life, and I love it!”

Visit the Embracing Cultures exhibit on display at the Warwick Museum of Art though July 24, Wednesday through Friday, 12-4 p.m. A small donation per visit is suggested.

Cornerstone Adult Services has five adult day centers in Rhode Island, including two in Warwick, a Memory Care Center on Warwick Neck Ave., and an adult day center in Apponaug. Cornerstone is a member of Saint Elizabeth Community, a not for profit provider of care and services for seniors with 10 Rhode Island locations.
