The New England Saltwater Fishing Show is this Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30 at the RI Convention Center, Providence and there is a lot to see and experience. The show, sponsored by the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA), will have over 90 seminars and workshops on fishing tactics and strategies. I'll be there speaking Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday at 11:30 on "How and Where to Catch Big Fluke" (summer flounder) with tips from charter captains and fluke fishing experts. There will be seminars on just about every topic…. fly casting, night fishing, jigging and trolling for striped bass, tuna tactics, bonito and false albacore, secrets of tautog fishing and much more. Over 250 exhibitors will be at the show from fishing tackle and boating gear to underwater photography and its all taking place this weekend.

Visit with underwater videographer Mike Laptew in his booth or attend his seminar "The Amazing World of Game Fish and How to Hook a Monster". Laptew said, "(This) all new video takes you underwater to a close up look at monster striped bass, fluke, tautog, bonito, and the prey they eat." Laptew explains how to find areas where the biggest fish swim and tactics for catching them. This is underwater photography at its best, particularly his striped bass video and still images. Laptew said, "You will see exactly how Greg Myerson… world record holder for striped bass, fishes his rattling sinker rig. Captain Blaine Anderson demonstrates his approach to catching bass over 70 pounds. Tony Stetzko, legendary Cape Cod fisherman, passes on some surf fishing advice… the perfect primer for the 2014 season."

"Wicked Tuna" captains

On Saturday and Sunday Captains Ralph Wilkins, Kevin Leonowert and Bill Monte from the television program "Wicked Tuna" are scheduled to appear to meet fans.

Sunday is family day

All women and children under 12 will be admitted free on Sunday, March 30. A scavenger hunt for children will be held Sunday. As a child enters the show with a parent they are given a Scavenger Hunt search sheet that can net them a variety of prizes.

Herring making

an appearance

Herring in RI Rivers is a sign that spring is here and raises hopes that the striped bass are not far behind. This past Friday Rich from Barrington reported on RISAA's blog, "Spotted the first herring at Mussachuck Creek in Barrington this morning, close to within a week of previous years, there is still ice on the lake so I'm thinking temperature of the water doesn't slow them down much…"

New fishing board game

The new "Fishing Camp" board game has you race your opponent around the game board to be first back at the docks by answering fishing trivia questions correctly. Fishing Camp is the newest outdoors-themed game being introduced by Education Outdoors, and is a recipient of The Toy Man® Seal of Approval. To play Fishing Camp, each player rolls the dice and moves his or her boat that number of spaces forward on the board. If the boat stops on a green lily pad the die is passed to the next player, but if the boat stops on a yellow lily pad the player draws a Fishing Camp trivia card. If the player answers the question on the card correctly, he or she rolls again. Fishing Camp is rated for ages 4 and up and can be played by 2-8 people. Fishing Camp retails for $24.99. The game can be purchased at www.educationoutdoors.net.

Squid fishing seminar Monday, March 31

Everyone knows that striped bass (and most other species) love squid, and nothing can compare with fresh bait. Chuck Dore, Dave Fewster and Tom Wood have learned how to catch squid and are willing to share their knowledge at a RISAA seminar Monday, March 31, 7:00 p.m. at the West Valley Inn, West Warwick. They will talk about the how, where, when, and why, locations, tackle and jig tips and answer then audience questions. Visit www.risaa.org for information.

Where's the bite

Cod fishing bite continued to be slow a press time as sea conditions have prevented party boats from sailing much of the week. Angler John Migliori of Newport said, "Today (last Friday) being the first day of Spring I thought I would get my saltwater fishing season underway. I spent a few hours fishing at Sachuest Point for Cod fish to no avail."

Captain Dave Monti has been fishing and shell fishing on Narragansett Bay for over 40 years. He holds a captain's master license and a charter fishing license. Contact or forward fishing news and photos to Capt. Monti at dmontifish@verizon.net.
