On Flag Day Tuesday, residents of Ethan Place watched as the Legion of Honor, Rhode Island Shrine performed a flag ceremony that included the burning of a worn flag after it was properly cut up and the raising of a flag outside the residence. David Bradley, past commander of the unit that performs similar ceremonies throughout the state, explained that the first action is to cut the blue field from the flag and then the red and white stripes. He said the stars are cut out and given to veterans while the remaining elements of the flag are burned. Here, Bradley (at left), with Norman Messinger, Frank DePetrillo, Porfirio Dacanay, Albert Larivere and Joseph Bennett, explains the process to (seated from left) Ethan Place residents Bill Benoit, Henry McCauley, Donald Rocheleau and James Shaw. Also participating in the ceremony was William Lacross, who is not pictured. (Warwick Beacon photo)
