The Rhode Island Community Food Bank announced this week it is 30,000 pounds shy of meeting the 150,000-pound goal for its Summer Food Drive, which ends Aug. 31. Donations of healthy, non-perishable food can be made any weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Food Bank’s facility, 200 Niantic Avenue, Providence.
Financial donations also support the Summer Food Drive. Each dollar donated enables the Food Bank to provide three pounds of nutritious food. Donations can be made online at www.rifoodbank.org/SummerFoodDrive. Of the 120,000 pounds raised thus far, 10,000 pounds resulted from financial donations.
“The initial response to the Summer Food Drive from businesses and individuals was impressive,” said Andrew Schiff, chief executive officer of the Food Bank.
Most needed items include: peanut butter, canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, dried or canned beans, whole grain pasta, brown rice, healthy breakfast cereal, and canned soups, stews or chili.
The Food Bank’s statewide network of food pantries now serves 63,000 people every month, up from 33,000 in 2007. One in three served by the Food Bank is a child under the age of 18.
