Former Johnston man arrested on child pornography charges

A man who previously lived in Johnston was arrested Thursday on child pornography charges, according to Rhode Island State Police.

Matthew Viano, 30, of 7 Governor St., Apt. R7 in Providence, was arraigned in Third Division Court on charges of possession and transfer of child pornography. He was released on $10,000 surety bail, with conditions set that he must have no contact with children and not access the Internet.

According to state police, members of the Computer Crimes Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force began an undercover investigative operation in April to identify subjects involved in sharing images of child pornography online.

An Internet connection at a Johnston residence was found to have been used to download such materials, police say, and the execution of a search warrant led to Viano being identified as a former resident of the address and the suspect in the online transfer of the illegal images.

The ICAC Task Force is comprised of members of the Computer Crimes Unit along with detectives from the Coventry, Warwick, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Portsmouth, North Kingstown, Jamestown, Bristol and South Kingstown police departments, as well as special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and United States Postal Inspection Services (USPS).
