Fowler facing heart surgery

Don Fowler has been writing and editing our Entertainment section, without missing a week, since 1977.

He will be entering the hospital on Thursday, Sept. 8 for quadruple heart bypass surgery, and will face at least a month of recuperation and rehab.

“I’m confident that my recovery will be fast and I’ll be back at the movies and theatres in a few weeks,” Fowler said.

In the meantime, Don has recruited Bill Gale, former Journal entertainment writer, currently theatre reviewer for RIPR (Rhode Island Public Radio) to review Trinity’s “Beowulf.”

“I have not missed a Trinity play since the mid-Sixties, and have been to every Trinity press night since 1977,” Fowler said. “I’m determined to see the play before it finishes its run. Bill has been my mentor, introducing me to the people and theatres of Rhode Island, and we both have a love and appreciation for the theatre. I’m grateful for his help.”

As far as movies go, Fowler will miss a few openings. He suggests visiting “Rotten Tomatoes” for an overview of upcoming films that includes both critic and viewer ratings.

“While I frequently disagree with the big city film critics, I find that the folks at Rotten Tomatoes are closer to my evaluation of current movies,” he said.

Meanwhile, he will be editing press releases and writing articles during his recuperation (“To keep from going crazy. I’m not used to sitting around”).
