Freshman Hawks advance to state title game

The Bishop Hendricken freshman baseball team took care of business convincingly in the state semifinals on Monday, blowing out Tiverton 15-0.

The win gives the top-ranked Hawks a berth in the state championship game opposite No. 2 La Salle, which beat Portsmouth 24-2 in the other semifinal.

Hendricken scored four times in the first against Tiverton, then added two in the second, six in the third and three in the fourth, all the while racking up 13 hits. The Hawks also didn’t make a single error in the five-inning, mercy-rule shortened game.

Tiverton did load the bases in the top of the fifth, but Hendricken pitcher David DeFusco worked out of the jam to preserve the shutout. The Tigers had just one hit one on the day.

The Hawks went 10-0 during the regular season, scoring 87 runs and allowing just six. La Salle was 8-2 and scored the most runs in the state with 93. Its only two losses, however, were to Hendricken – 7-0 on April 7 and 7-3 on May 8.

The championship game will be played Friday at 6 p.m. at West Warwick’s McCarthy Field. (Warwick Beacon photos by William Geoghegan)
