Frozen Clam: Dip to help fund mentoring set for Jan. 1

“A minute of discomfort for a year of glory,” says Jo-Ann Schofield, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership (RIMP).

On New Year’s Day the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership will host the Fourth Annual Frozen Clam Plunge at Goddard Park State Beach at noon. Brave souls will jump into Greenwich Bay to raise money for the mentoring program as well as kick off National Mentoring Month.

In an attempt to bring a national focus on the need for mentors and all the good a mentor can be for a child, Harvard School of Public Help and MENTOR began National Mentoring Month in 2002.

Schofield said, “We already have 40 people signed up and we are expecting to have more sign up once the holidays have settled and obviously signing up the day of the plunge. Last year we raised $5,000, but this year we are hoping to raise $7,500. With the money we can match more kids with mentors throughout the year.”

Last year there were 100 participants, and RIMP is hoping to see more than that this year.

Schofield explained that the national average costs to maintain a yearlong mentoring relationship is $1,500, but here in Rhode Island the average is closer to $500.

She said, “Because our average is lower with $5,000 we can support 10 mentors and mentees.”

This year though the RIMP is trying to get more teams, collective of friends or business groups and clubs, to register for the event.

Schofield said, “We have a nice incentive for teams this year. The largest team to sign up will win a heated tent. It is somewhere nice and warm to change for the event and dry off after the plunge.”

Registration for the event is a $25 donation and if you register before the event you are guaranteed a Frozen Clam t-shirt. Schofield will be jumping into the cold waters in support of the program.

“A few weeks ago I did a practice plunge and the water was about 45 degrees,” she said. “It was a bit nippy. It is daunting but there is something exhilarating about the whole experience. There’s a sense of adrenaline and a sense of accomplishment that you can carry with you all year. It’s more than just a jump into the cold water, you’re helping the mentor program.”
