Fung, Fenton plan to marry

Wedding bells are on the way for Cranston’s chief executive.

Mayor Allan Fung proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Barbara Ann Fenton, while on vacation more than a week ago at a resort outside Cancún, Mexico.

“We were dying to tell people and make it public, but we had to tell family and friends first,” Fung said Tuesday. “I’m very excited to have Barbara Ann as a partner in life … she’s a bright, intelligent person who’s also got a bright future ahead of her.”

The couple has yet to set a precise date, but Fung said they plan on marrying in 2016 in Fenton’s hometown of Newport.

Fenton – who is active in Republican politics, and was a constant presence on the campaign trail during Fung’s bid for governor last year – relayed to WPRO that there was a minor scare during the proposal when the engagement ring briefly fell from Fung’s hand.

Fung said a large bird had then dived toward the ring, possibly thinking it was food.

“It was just kind of crazy,” he said with a laugh. “It was a sunny day, so that was good.”

Fung and Fenton met in 2012, when both were delegates for Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Fenton, Fung recalled, accidentally hit him in the head with an umbrella. The first day of the convention had been cancelled due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Isaac, and the two went out for lunch.

“That’s how we kind of first met,” Fung said.
