Don’t look now, but Hendricken’s Joey Tucker could be the best in the state very soon.
Hendricken golf head coach Rick Angeli is confident that soon-to-be junior Tucker is closing in on Moses Brown’s Will Dickson for the title of Rhode Island’s top golfer.
“Joey came in as a freshman as a single-sport guy, golf is his thing year-round, and he just works tremendously hard year-round,” Angeli said. “His game has taken a step over the last year or so in terms of added lengths off the tee, his iron play is very consistent.”
Angeli said that, outside of Hendricken, Tucker has been competing well, too. He has posted success in a few regional U.S. competitions, including winning a qualifier for the Liberty National Junior Invitational.
As he continues to grow and improve, Angeli said Tucker will prove to be a significant foundation for the team over the next couple seasons.
“Joey had a rough year with the putter and if he were to improve his putting a bit he would take another step forward,” Angeli said. “Any given day he is pushing far and is definitely the backbone of our team.”
If Tucker keeps taking those steps forward, The Rhode Island Golf Coaches Association First Teamer could find himself atop the RIIL State Golf Championship standings next season.
