Getting the scoop on a family business

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse made a visit to Warwick Ice Cream Friday to deliver a Senate Certificate congratulating the company on 85 years of business.

Charlie Clemente Bucci, who came to America from Italy, began the company and the Bucci family still runs it. Gerard Bucci Jr. is currently president of the business and his son Vincent Bucci is also involved with the business.

Gerard Bucci and Whitehouse discussed the exciting new coffee flavored ice cream that was born out of a partnership with Autocrat, another iconic Rhode Island company. Whitehouse said he hoped they would produce a coffee flavor with chocolate chips in it.

After giving the certificate, Whitehouse was presented with a Frank Galasso lithograph that had Warwick Ice Cream on it. Whitehouse was then taken on a tour of the facilities donning a hairnet. The tour ended with a tasting of a blood orange flavored organic ice cream. After one taste he looked up and said to Thomas Bucci, “Wow, that’s good!”

Thomas Bucci replied, “That’s why we’ve been around for so long; we make good products.”

The family-owned company has also recently sent 730 three-gallon tubs of their product to China. Currently, Warwick Ice Cream’s main competitor in China would be Haagen-Dazs, but the Buccis’ product would be sold at a reduced price, which Gerard Bucci says will be key to their success in the foreign country. Here, Whitehouse samples organic ice cream as Thomas Bucci looks on.
