Athlete of the Year - Laurel Ten Eyck, Toll Gate

Toll Gate junior Laurel Ten Eyck is this year’s Warwick Beacon Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year.

Ten Eyck, who played as the Titans’ No. 2 player last fall, put together a standout season in Division I.

She earned the No. 14 seed for Division I in the 32-player singles state tournament.

Ten Eyck defeated Warwick Vets’ No. 1 player Corinne Gregoire in the opening round 6-4, 6-4, to earn a spot in the round of 16, where she eventually fell in straight sets to Lauren Bertch from La Salle. Bertsch went on to lose to eventual champion Peri Sheinin in the semifinals in three sets.

After leaving her mark as a junior, Toll Gate head coach Gary Gorman is excited to see what Ten Eyck will do as a senior.

“She played as our No. 2 this year and will be our No. 1 player next year,” Gorman said. “She’s really excited to excel in her senior year.”

Gorman is looking forward to having an experienced player like Ten Eyck playing out of the No. 1 spot.

Toll Gate, which went 3-10 in 2015, will be looking to encounter more success in 2016, and Ten Eyck will be a big part of that potential success.

“She’s been on the team for three years and she’s started three years,” Gorman said. “She’s a big asset for our program.”
