Before heading to Central Connecticut State University in 2017, Hendricken’s Joey Tucker will look to have the best season of his career after a solid junior year.
Tucker finished four strokes out of first place in a three-way tie for second place at the R.I. High School Golf Championship behind top finisher Will Dickson. As Hendricken head coach Rick Angeli noted, even Tucker will say a 149 total at Cranston Country Club wasn’t his best performance, but “the gap has closed” between Dickson, Tucker and the other top golfers in the state.
“I don’t think he’s fazed by any of that [pressure],” Angeli said. “At the Hendricken Invitational, he went into a battle with Will and battled him for 18 holes. He has all the tools he needs to be successful next year and at the next level. What helps Joe is that we’ve got a group of guys that are high-level players.”
Tucker has a symbiotic relationship with his teammates, as they all help to improve one another on the course.
“Part of the reason for their success is Joe Tucker,” Angeli said. “They push each other. Having Joe back for another season gives us a lot of hope as we go into next year. Finishing in second by four strokes is a tough pill to swallow. We really felt that we had a team that could win. We were right there. Next year, we’re gonna be right in the mix, with Joe leading the crew.”
Tucker is continuously striving to play better, fed by a desire to “play at the next level.” He will have a chance to do that as a Blue Devil, but he and the Hawks have unfinished business at the high school level.
“He’s just a natural competitor, he wants to be playing in the big spot,” Angeli said. “He’s not fazed by it. He works very hard at his game and fortunately a lot of the results have shown that.”
