To the Editor:
An open letter of thanks to Representative K. Joseph Shekarchi for his work on, and subsequent passage of, a bill to require Rhode Island health insurance providers to cover the cost of using so called “off label drugs” to treat a variety of medical problems.
Representative Shekarchi worked tirelessly along with my multiple sclerosis physician, Dr. Joseph Guarnaccia, MD, to draft legislation, similar to legislation recently passed in the state of Connecticut, which mandates Rhode Island health insurance providers cover the cost of treatment using these so called “off label” drugs within certain professional guidelines.
Passage of this bill is great news to the many Rhode Islanders who suffer with a variety of illnesses that don’t respond well to traditional medications, and who were previously denied “off label” medications that do offer help, simply because the medication in question had been invented to treat another condition.
Thank you, Representative Shekarchi, on behalf of all who will benefit from this bill, for your efforts. If I were a resident of your district, you would certainly have my vote.

Joe Shekarchi saved Warwick taxpayers...again. Thank you Joe! Your hard work finalized in your bill making R.I. Health Insurance providers cover generic as well as name brand prescriptions will save taxpayers tens of thousands over the next years. We need more legislation like that and more leaders like Joe.
